Job description

The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) brings a competitive edge to Massachusetts municipal utilities dedicated to providing their customers with low-cost and reliable electricity. We are currently seeking a Plant Operations Manager at our Stony Brook Energy Center. This person will be responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Stony Brook Energy Center through the direct and indirect supervision of all operations personnel.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Stony Brook Energy Center through the direct supervision of the four Shift Supervisors, and the indirect supervision of fourteen full-time Plant Operators. Evaluate and make recommendations on improvements to all aspects of plant operations and maintenance.
  • Develop, implement and review operating records and operating procedures to ensure uniform safe and efficient operation of plant equipment and improvement of it. 
  • Review and analyze daily operations to identify trends, which may affect future operations.
  • Identify potential maintenance problems associated with the operation of plant equipment.
  • Coordinate equipment to allow for scheduled maintenance.
  • Optimize the safety, efficiency and reliability of plant operations.
  • Periodically review existing plant operations training procedures and records and modify as necessary.  Establish new training procedures where appropriate.
  • External dispatching of offsite resources such as wind turbines and combustion engines / turbines.
  • Perform the duties of Shift Supervisor, maintenance department supervisors, and/or the Site Manager in his/her absence as assigned
  • Monitor control room activities and overall plant operation, instructing and issuing directives as may be necessary.
  • Evaluate safety permit requests and issue same.
  • Maintain records and keep personnel informed of unusual or problem situations and activities and briefing personnel at time of shift change.
  • Monitor physical plant, identify existing or potential problems and take appropriate action.
  • Write work orders required for corrective maintenance actions.
  • Provide ongoing training of crew members and review operating procedures.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance, including  PHMSA, EPA/MA DEP, NERC, OSHA/ MA DPS, MA DFS /MA DPS, NEIWPCC

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • 1st Class Mass Stationary Engineer’s License or the ability to attain one within three months
  • Massachusetts Wastewater Operator License (Grade 1) desired
  • PHMSA Operator Qualifications desired
  •  Five-ten years’ experience in power plant operations at a senior technical level, with supervisory responsibilities
  • Previous experience conducting heat rate analysis, economic evaluation, and overseeing effective power plant chemistry programs
  • Previous experience at developing and maintaining budgets and business plans
  • Previous experience adhering to, training and qualifying against NERC regulations
  • Working knowledge of computerized DCS control systems, computerized operating data acquisition and historical trending systems including PI
  • Highly knowledgeable in CCGT power plant operations
  • Proven abilities in leading, managing and independent decision making
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write original policies and communicate them effectively
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Office, PI, CMMS, safety permitting software and other plant computer systems
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
