How much do system on chip jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for system on chip in the United States is $27.75, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $28.12 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as System on Chip (SoC) design, semiconductor engineering, or software engineering with extensive experience and advanced skills can earn $300,000 or more annually. These roles often require advanced degrees, certifications, and expertise in hardware design, verification, or embedded systems, typically working in high-tech industries or large corporations.

What is a system on chip and give examples?

A System on Chip (SoC) is an integrated circuit that consolidates all essential components of a computer or electronic system, such as the CPU, memory, and peripherals, onto a single chip. Examples include smartphones like the Apple A-series chips, Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, and Samsung Exynos chips, which require knowledge of hardware design and embedded systems for development roles.

What is a System on Chip (SoC)?

A System on Chip (SoC) is an integrated circuit that combines all the essential components of a computer or other electronic system onto a single chip. This typically includes a central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), memory, input/output ports, and sometimes specialized modules like signal processors or wireless radios. SoCs are widely used in smartphones, tablets, and embedded systems because they offer high performance in a compact, energy-efficient package. Their integration reduces size, cost, and power consumption compared to traditional multi-chip solutions.

How to become a system on chip engineer?

To become a system on chip (SoC) engineer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, with many roles preferring a master's or Ph.D. in VLSI design, embedded systems, or digital design. Skills in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, proficiency with CAD tools, and understanding of integrated circuit design are essential. Gaining experience through internships, projects, or certifications in ASIC/FPGA design can also improve job prospects.

What are some common challenges faced by System on Chip (SoC) engineers during the design and verification process?

System on Chip engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating multiple subsystems (CPU, GPU, memory, and I/O) on a single chip while managing power consumption, performance, and area constraints. Ensuring compatibility and effective communication between different IP cores can be complex, especially as designs become more sophisticated. Additionally, verification and validation require extensive simulation and testing to detect subtle bugs or timing issues before fabrication, making teamwork and close collaboration with hardware, software, and verification teams essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a System on Chip (SoC) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System on Chip (SoC) Engineer, you need a strong background in digital and analog circuit design, embedded systems, and hardware description languages, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Proficiency with design tools such as Verilog/VHDL, EDA tools (e.g., Cadence, Synopsys), and simulation environments is essential, along with knowledge of SoC architectures. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set standout professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities are critical for designing, verifying, and optimizing complex integrated circuits that power modern electronic devices.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as hardware design, FPGA development, or chip architecture within the semiconductor industry can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. These positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and a strong understanding of system-on-chip (SoC) design and manufacturing processes.

Job description

Description

ย We are looking for a skilled Systems Engineer with hands-on experience in VHDL-based chip development to support the design, integration, and testing of complex digital systems. This role bridges the gap between high-level system requirements and detailed hardware implementation, contributing to end-to-end development of custom digital solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze system requirements and translate them into hardware architecture and specifications.
    ย
  • Design, develop, and verify digital hardware using VHDL.
    ย
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration across platforms.
    ย
  • Conduct simulations, synthesis, and timing analysis to validate design functionality and performance.
    ย
  • Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and system-level testing.

Requirements

TS SCI w/ Polygraph Clearance Required

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong experience in digital system design using VHDL.
    ย
  • Demonstrated expertise in FPGA or ASIC development processes.
    ย
  • Familiarity with simulation tools such as ModelSim and synthesis tools (e.g., Synopsys, Xilinx Vivado).
    ย
  • Ability to work from system-level requirements to detailed design and implementation.
    ย

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Verilog and mixed-language design environments.
    ย
  • Background in embedded systems or system-on-chip (SoC) design.
    ย
  • Familiarity with industry-standard protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet).
