System Network Engineer information

What is a system network engineer?

A System Network Engineer is an IT professional responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting computer networks and system infrastructures. They ensure that network hardware and software function efficiently, securely, and reliably to support an organization's operations. Their duties often include configuring routers and switches, monitoring network performance, resolving connectivity issues, and implementing security measures. System Network Engineers may also be involved in planning network expansions, upgrading systems, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system network engineer?

To excel as a System Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, system administration, troubleshooting, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Cisco IOS, firewalls, network monitoring systems, and certifications such as CCNA or CompTIA Network+ is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and respond quickly to issues. These skills are vital to ensure network reliability, security, and optimal system performance in complex IT environments.

What are some typical challenges system network engineers face when managing complex network infrastructures?

System Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring network security against evolving threats, minimizing downtime during upgrades or maintenance, and troubleshooting connectivity issues across diverse hardware and software environments. Balancing the need for high network performance with scalability and security can be demanding, especially in large organizations with multiple locations. Successful engineers proactively monitor network health, collaborate closely with IT support teams, and stay updated on the latest technologies to address these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between System Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

  • Documenting and maintaining system specifications and interface control documents

  • Conducting propagation analysis to ensure coverage and capacity objectives are met

  • Performing site and vehicle surveys for radio equipment installations

  • Troubleshooting radio systems and performing system performance improvements

  • Participating in radio and network design and implementation activities

  • Participating in Installation and Test & Commissioning activities, as well as network maintenance activities remote and in the field

  • Experience with radio propagation analysis tools and troubleshooting

  • Understanding of TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, and network security policies

  • Contribute to innovative projects

  • Utilise our flexible and inclusive working environment

  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning

  • Progress towards senior engineering or leadership roles

  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)
