SAPA Transmission is seeking an experienced Applications Engineer to join our Engineering Team. In this key role, you will serve as the primary technical liaison with customers, representing the company on complex mechanical and electrical system matters. You will play a hands-on role in control system testing, program development, and system integration, while actively contributing to major design milestones such as System Functional Reviews (SFR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and Test Readiness Reviews (TRR).

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical lead for control system development and integration within the transmission testing program, acting as a primary interface with customers on electronic, electrical, and software-related issues.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and validation teams to ensure cohesive system behavior across all integration points.
  • Guide root-cause analysis during system testing and lead calibration strategy development for shift quality, torque management, clutch control, and related transmission functions.
  • Manage and document calibration updates throughout development and validation phases.
  • Define and execute subsystem and system-level test plans, including performance, durability, and fail-safe validation.
  • Utilize tools such as AVL PUMA and Dewesoft to analyze large datasets and identify performance improvement opportunities.
  • Operate and maintain HIL systems for TCU testing and software validation.
  • Support transmission testing planning, procedures, and diagnostics, including development of custom harnesses and accurate signal mapping between sensors, actuators, and ECUs.
  • Develop and maintain a customer-facing transmission software tool for diagnostics, calibration, and maintenance.
  • Maintain and update electrical and electronic interface documentation to ensure accurate system integration and traceability.
  • Support the development of program-required technical content, including interface information, ILS documentation, and materials for SFR, PDR, CDR, and TRR milestones.
  • Provide technical support for supplier sourcing, validation, and resolving supply chain or production-related issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in control systems development with a focus on transmission or powertrain systems.
  • Strong understanding of transmission systems, electronic control units (ECUs), and system-level integration.
  • Hands-on experience with calibration, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of control systems.
  • Experience supporting system design reviews (SFR, PDR, CDR, TRR) and developing related technical documentation.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interface directly with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.

Benefits:

  • 6% retirement plan contribution by SAPA Transmission (regardless of employee contribution to 401k plan)
  • Paid Holiday, Time Off (PTO), and sick time.
  • Medical, Rx, dental, vision and life insurance benefits with minimal employee contribution.
  • Short and long-term disability.
