What is a system engineer?

System Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and manage complex systems within organizations. They are responsible for integrating various hardware and software components to ensure that systems function efficiently and reliably. Their job often involves troubleshooting, optimizing system performance, and ensuring security. System Engineers work across industries such as IT, aerospace, telecommunications, and manufacturing. They also collaborate with other teams to ensure that systems meet both technical and business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of computer systems and networks, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with operating systems (like Linux and Windows), automation tools, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and clear communication set outstanding System Engineers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex IT infrastructures that support business operations.

What are some common challenges system engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

System Engineers often collaborate with professionals from various disciplines, such as software developers, hardware engineers, and project managers. One of the main challenges is ensuring clear communication and alignment of technical requirements across different teams, which may have differing priorities and vocabularies. Additionally, System Engineers must balance system-level considerations like integration and scalability with specialized component needs. Adapting to rapidly changing project scopes and troubleshooting integration issues are also frequent hurdles, making strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills essential for success.

What is the difference between System Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectSystem EngineerNetwork Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, certifications like CompTIA Server+, Cisco CCNABachelor's in Computer Science or related, Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining IT systems and infrastructureDesigning, configuring, and managing network infrastructure and connectivity
Employer & Industry UsageIT departments, tech companies, enterprise organizationsTelecommunications, data centers, large corporate networks
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for their roles in IT infrastructure managementRelated but focuses on network-specific tasks

While both System Engineers and Network Engineers work within IT infrastructure, System Engineers focus on overall system design, deployment, and maintenance, whereas Network Engineers specialize in network setup, security, and connectivity. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right roles for their technical needs.

Is a system engineer a high paying job?

System engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. In many regions, they are considered well-paid professionals due to their technical skills, certifications, and ability to manage complex systems. Advanced roles or specialized skills can lead to higher compensation levels.

Is a system engineer an entry level job?

A system engineer is typically not an entry-level position; it usually requires several years of experience in IT, networking, or software development, along with relevant certifications such as Cisco or Microsoft. Entry-level roles in related fields may serve as stepping stones toward becoming a system engineer.

What exactly do system engineers do?

System engineers design, implement, and maintain complex computer systems and networks to ensure their reliability and efficiency. They analyze system requirements, troubleshoot issues, and often work with tools like servers, networking hardware, and automation scripts. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of operating systems and security are essential for this role.

Job description

We are looking for the right people — people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

About Power Generation

Power Generation delivers integrated energy solutions that support reliable, efficient, and lower-emission operations across upstream, midstream, LNG, and industrial applications. Our technologies include natural gas treatment, power systems integration, and advanced process solutions that enable customers to optimize energy utilization and reduce environmental impact.

About the Role

The Principal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Integration Engineer serves as a technical authority for the evaluation, specification, integration, commissioning, and lifecycle management of battery energy storage systems supporting advanced power generation solutions.

This role provides system-level engineering leadership across BESS technology selection, electrical integration, protection, controls, communications, safety, and commissioning. Working closely with electrical, controls, civil, mechanical, procurement, construction, commissioning, safety, and operations teams, the engineer develops technical standards and specifications, evaluates vendors, and ensures BESS solutions deliver the required performance, reliability, safety, and long-term value.

The position will have particular focus on BESS integration supporting AI and hyperscale data centers, behind-the-meter generation, microgrids, and other complex power systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of technical requirements and performance specifications for utility-scale and behind-the-meter BESS installations, including capacity, duration, dynamic response, reliability, grid-forming/grid-following operation, and black-start capability.
  • Evaluate BESS technologies, system architectures, suppliers, and integrators; develop technical bid evaluations and support vendor selection and commercial negotiations.
  • Define electrical integration requirements between BESS, generation assets, medium-voltage distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, microgrids, and data center loads.
  • Establish protection, controls, communications, and energy-management requirements, including voltage and frequency regulation, load sharing, state-of-charge management, and emergency operating modes.
  • Develop system-level operating philosophies and Theory of Operation documentation for normal, islanded, generator-support, load-transient, black-start, emergency, and maintenance conditions.
  • Lead technical safety and reliability assessments, including thermal-runaway mitigation, fire protection, HAZOP, FMEA, risk assessments, and applicable code and standards compliance.
  • Develop lifecycle and total-cost-of-ownership evaluations considering degradation, auxiliary power, augmentation strategies, warranties, operating costs, and end-of-life requirements.
  • Develop repeatable engineering, site-layout, installation, and construction standards for BESS deployments.
  • Lead or support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, energization, troubleshooting, performance validation, and turnover to operations.
  • Collaborate across engineering, procurement, construction, operations, safety, and commercial teams to ensure BESS solutions meet technical, contractual, and business requirements.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in power systems, energy storage, renewable integration, utility infrastructure, or data center power projects, including direct experience with utility-scale or industrial BESS.
  • Experience integrating BESS with generation assets, medium-voltage distribution systems, microgrids, or other complex electrical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of battery technologies, power conversion systems, protection and controls, power-system modeling, energy management, and grid-forming/grid-following inverter technologies.
  • Experience reviewing EPC and vendor engineering packages, technical specifications, equipment designs, and system integration requirements.
  • Strong systems-engineering judgment, analytical problem-solving, technical communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Experience supporting AI or hyperscale data center power infrastructure, behind-the-meter generation, or high-availability power systems.
  • Experience with gas-engine integration, microgrids, islanded power systems, or black-start applications.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3, OPC UA, digital substations, or related power-system communication protocols.
  • Experience with power-system simulation and analysis tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, or equivalent.

Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for higher-level positions based on experience, capability, and business needs. Career progression includes R&D Electrical Engineer Advisor, R&D Electrical Engineer Senior Advisor and R&D Electrical Engineer Chief Advisor.
