System Engineer System Administrator information

What is a system engineer system administrator?

System Engineer System Administrators are IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting computer systems and networks within an organization. They ensure that servers, workstations, and network infrastructure operate efficiently and securely. Their role often combines responsibilities from both system engineering (planning and deploying systems) and system administration (managing day-to-day operations and troubleshooting issues). These professionals play a critical role in ensuring system uptime, data integrity, and cybersecurity.

How do system engineer system administrators typically manage unexpected system outages or incidents?

System Engineer System Administrators are often the first responders when system outages or incidents occur. They follow established incident response protocols, which include immediate assessment, prioritization based on the severity, and communication with affected users or teams. Collaboration is key—they often work closely with network engineers, security teams, and end-users to diagnose and resolve issues quickly. This role requires not only technical troubleshooting skills but also the ability to remain calm under pressure and communicate effectively during high-stress situations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system engineer system administrator?

To thrive as a System Engineer/System Administrator, you need strong knowledge of operating systems (Windows, Linux), networking fundamentals, and experience with system maintenance and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Active Directory, virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V), cloud services (AWS, Azure), and certifications such as CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring reliable system performance, minimizing downtime, and supporting organizational IT needs efficiently.

The System Administrator II - Network owns our network and connectivity infrastructure end to end across sites, from core switching and routing to wireless, firewalls, and VPN. This role is the network subject matter expert on the IT team and keeps our locations reliably connected, secure, and performant, working closely with the IT Director and site teams. As the IT team member based at this location, the role also handles occasional Level 1 IT tasks that need to be done in person (no more than about four hours per week) and works a hybrid schedule, with on-site attendance expected when required. This role is posted in Chicago, IL or Las Vegas, NV. Early priorities include documenting the current network, closing security gaps, and standardizing configuration across sites.
Compensation:
  • 105kUSD/annually
  • Extended Benefits
  • Short Term Incentive Program

What you'll do
  • Design, configure, and maintain LAN/WAN, switching, and routing across multiple sites, including VLANs, inter-site connectivity, and performance monitoring
  • Administer firewalls, VPNs, and network security controls: rules, segmentation, and secure remote access
  • Deploy and manage enterprise wireless (controllers, access points, SSIDs, coverage and capacity planning)
  • Monitor network health and availability, set up alerting, and respond to incidents, outages, and performance issues
  • Maintain network documentation, diagrams, IP address management, and change records
  • Partner with vendors and ISPs on circuits, escalations, and hardware, and manage refresh and capacity planning
  • Serve as the network SME within the IT team: define standards, share knowledge with peers, and evaluate new technologies as the environment evolves
  • As the IT team member on site at this location, handle Level 1 tasks that need to be done in person (hardware setup and swaps, printer and peripheral issues, hands-on troubleshooting), up to about 4 hours per week; remote support is handled by the broader IT team
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Firewall, VPN, and network security configuration and troubleshooting
  • Wireless design, deployment, and optimization
  • Able to diagnose complex connectivity and performance issues, including under time pressure
  • Self-directed: comfortable owning a domain and setting priorities with minimal oversight while collaborating across a cross-functional IT team
  • Comfortable handling occasional hands-on Level 1 IT tasks, such as desktop, printer, and peripheral troubleshooting, with a customer service mindset

Education & Experience
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

IDEAL EXPERIENCE: You won't need every item on this list. If you meet most of it, we encourage you to apply.
  • 5+ years in network administration or engineering, including time owning a multi-site network end to end
  • Hands-on with enterprise switching and routing (VLANs, OSPF/BGP or static routing, QoS)
  • Firewall administration (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA, or similar) and VPN configuration
  • Enterprise wireless design and administration; network monitoring tools and structured troubleshooting
  • Preferred: SD-WAN; Meraki or Aruba; cloud networking (Azure/AWS); scripting/automation; CCNA/CCNP or equivalent; small-team background wearing multiple hats
