Who are we hiring?
Sphere is looking for a Senior System Development Engineer to join the Cloud Services team under the Senior Director of Cloud Services. In this role, you will support a growing and diversifying set of ground-breaking productions; designing and deploying the infrastructure to enable and support all Studio and Production workflows and writing the services and tools that glue those workflows together.
Sphere requires innovators who are used to adventuring beyond their comfort zone to solve real production challenges in collaboration with peers, stakeholders, and end users to clear today's hurdles while building towards a better tomorrow. The extreme level of integration between disciplines requires a balanced, creative, agile approach to be successful; being able to prioritize, communicate, and see the bigger picture are required skills.
Candidates must have a proven history of building secure and efficient cloud computing networks, environments, and software services; ideally in a large-scale VFX or post-production setting. Candidates can expect to have a range of responsibilities, including: network & firewall design and implementation, development & deployment of tools and services, artist workstation & render node deployments, high-speed storage deployment and tuning, and general system reliability monitoring.
What will you do?
  • Design, develop, deploy, and maintain production applications, services, and datastores
  • Design, deploy, and monitor cloud infrastructure that enable efficient, secure, and reliable Production workflows
  • Scope, manage, and implement the migration of legacy on-prem services to cloud-based infrastructure
  • Lead collaboration between pipeline engineers, end users, and stakeholders to create scalable and secure solutions to address problems, from proof-of-concept to deployment
  • Shepherd and implement all changes in an IaC deployment workflow
  • Monitor, refine, and optimize existing cloud service architecture and resource utilization
  • Provide exceptional experiences for our guests, partners, and team members, including by adhering to our appearance and presentation guidelines while on-site.

What do you need to succeed?
  • 8 years' minimum experience developing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining infrastructure and services in a cloud environment
  • Strong experience designing secure cloud VPCs, firewalls, and routing tables
  • Strong experience in all major OS (Linux, Windows, MacOS)
  • Strong understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, and general container-based application deployments
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms; GCP experience required
  • Strong experience developing and using infrastructure-as-code (IAC) resource provisioning tools (Terraform, CDK, Palumi, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of common web development patterns and designs (REST, microservices, serverless, pub/sub, etc.)
  • Strong experience with industry-standard CI/CD tools/workflows (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, etc.)
  • Strong experience with implementing and managing metrics monitoring and application performance monitoring (APM) tools (Prometheus/Grafana, DataDog, Sentry, NewRelic, etc.)
  • Experience with VFX, Post-Production, and Animation pipelines a plus
  • Experience with general Linux and Windows system administration
  • Experience with Python, bash, and similar scripting languages
  • Experience with version control tools (Git)
  • Google Professional Cloud Architect Certification or equivalent a plus
  • Experience with Hybrid On-Prem/Cloud Infrastructure a plus
  • Experience with Flow Production Tracking (formerly ShotGrid) a plus
  • Experience with Deadline (or similar render manager) a plus
  • Experience with ASWF's Rez package management a plus
  • Detail-oriented with excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, solicit feedback, and work under high pressure with tight deadlines
