What does a system designer do?

A System Designer is responsible for planning, creating, and specifying the architecture and components of complex systems, often in the fields of IT, engineering, or software development. They analyze requirements, design system structures, and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure the final product meets both technical and business needs. Their work includes creating diagrams, documentation, and models to guide the development team. System Designers play a crucial role in ensuring that systems are efficient, scalable, and reliable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Designer, you need strong analytical skills, a background in computer science or engineering, and experience with system architecture and requirements analysis. Familiarity with modeling tools like UML, CASE tools, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help System Designers effectively translate complex requirements into practical solutions. These skills are crucial for creating robust, scalable systems that meet organizational needs and ensure project success.

What are some common challenges system designers face when working on complex projects?

System Designers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless integration between various subsystems, effectively communicating requirements to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and managing changing project specifications. Balancing performance, scalability, and security needs while staying within budget and time constraints can also be demanding. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong analytical skills, adaptability, and proactive collaboration with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between System Designer vs Software Engineer?

AspectSystem DesignerSoftware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; often certifications in system architectureBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; certifications in programming or development
Work EnvironmentDesigning system architecture, collaborating with stakeholders, planning infrastructureWriting, testing, and maintaining code; implementing features based on designs
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, system integrators, consulting firmsSoftware development firms, tech startups, IT departments

While both roles require a strong technical background, System Designers focus on planning and structuring entire systems, whereas Software Engineers implement and develop software components based on those designs. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What is the average salary of a system designer?

The average salary of a system designer varies depending on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually. Senior system designers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in technology and engineering sectors.

What skills do you need to be a system designer?

A system designer needs strong technical skills in software architecture, systems analysis, and understanding of hardware and network infrastructure. Proficiency in modeling tools, programming, and knowledge of design patterns are essential, along with problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills to collaborate with development teams.

Job description

Why Harvey
At Harvey, we're transforming how legal and professional services operate. By combining frontier agentic AI, an enterprise-grade platform, and deep domain expertise, we're reshaping how critical knowledge work gets done for decades to come.
This is a rare chance to help build a generational company at a true inflection point. We have strong product-market fit and world-class investor support. We're scaling fast and defining a new category in real time. The work is ambitious, the bar is high, and the opportunity for growth - personal, professional, and financial - is unmatched.
Our team moves fast, takes ownership, and is deeply committed to the mission - operating with intensity, staying close to our customers, and pushing each other for excellence. We live by three values: Decisiveness, Simplicity, and Job's Not Finished. We act quickly on clear judgment over perfect information, we believe simplicity is what scales, and we're never satisfied with where we are. If you want to do the best work of your career alongside people who share that drive, we'd love to build with you.
At Harvey, the future of professional services is being written today - and we're just getting started.
Role Overview
As a Product Designer on the Design Systems team at Harvey, you will support in defining the foundations that make our product coherent, scalable, and trustworthy as it grows in complexity. The design system is not just a library of components. It is the shared language between design, engineering, and AI that ensures consistency, quality, and confidence across every interaction.
This is an ideal role for someone who loves precision, consistency, and execution, operating as a hands-on builder and trusted partner to the Design Systems team. Working closely with product designers and frontend engineers, you will craft, maintain, and scale the components, patterns, documentation, and system assets that power Harvey's product, improving the quality, consistency, and speed with which teams build.
We're looking for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments, has exceptional attention to detail, and takes pride in producing thoughtful, polished work. As the Design Systems team continues to grow, you'll help shape not only the system itself, but also the processes, workflows, and ways of working that enable the team to scale successfully.
Why Design Systems matter at Harvey
Harvey is an AI-native product. As the system reasons, responds, and adapts in real time, the interface must remain consistent and legible. A strong design system ensures that complexity does not leak into the experience. It enables teams to move faster, reduces cognitive load for users, and builds trust in moments where clarity matters most.
What You'll Do
  • Build, maintain, and evolve production-ready design system components, patterns, documentation, and reusable assets across Figma and emerging AI-native design workflows.
  • Partner with the Senior Design Systems Designer to scale Harvey's visual language and support the rollout of new system foundations across the product.
  • Collaborate with product designers and frontend engineers to ensure system components are intuitive to use, accurately implemented, and consistently adopted.
  • Own and create polished production assets, libraries, prototypes, and documentation that enable teams to build quickly and with confidence.
  • Support AI-assisted design workflows by preparing components, documentation, and system assets that are optimized for both designers and AI tools.
  • Maintain the quality and health of the design system through QA, organization, continuous refinement, and operational improvements.
  • Advocate for exceptional craftsmanship, consistency, and usability across every product surface.

What You Have
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Product Designer, Production Designer, UI Designer, or Design Systems Designer working on digital products.
  • Exceptional visual craft with a meticulous eye for detail, layout, spacing, consistency, and production quality.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams while maintaining a high quality bar.
  • Experience building and maintaining component libraries and design systems in Figma, including auto layout, variables, components, and variants.
  • Curiosity and experience in AI-assisted design tools and evolving implementation workflows, you don't need to be an engineer, but you're excited about where the discipline is heading.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with a desire to learn through close partnership with design and engineering.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment and enthusiasm for helping shape an evolving Design Systems practice.
Compensation
$150,800 - $226,200 USD
