What is a system analyst?

System Analysts are professionals who evaluate and improve the efficiency of information systems within an organization. They analyze existing IT systems and processes, work with stakeholders to identify business requirements, and design solutions to help meet those needs. System Analysts often act as a bridge between business users and technical teams, ensuring that IT solutions align with organizational goals. Their role may involve documenting requirements, testing new systems, and supporting the implementation of software or upgrades.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system analyst?

To thrive as a System Analyst, you need a solid understanding of information systems, business processes, and requirements gathering, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like SQL, UML, data modeling software, and project management systems, as well as certifications such as CBAP or ITIL, is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help System Analysts bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders. These competencies ensure successful system implementations that meet organizational goals and user needs.

What are some common challenges system analysts face when working with cross-functional teams?

System Analysts often collaborate with diverse teams, including developers, business stakeholders, and end-users. A common challenge is translating technical requirements into clear, actionable tasks that all team members can understand. Additionally, balancing conflicting priorities and managing expectations from various stakeholders can be demanding. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring successful project outcomes.

* Assess current and future-state trading capabilities through business process analysis, capability assessments, gap analyses, vendor evaluations, and RFP support to recommend technology solutions aligned with business objectives
* Partner with stakeholders across FX Trading, Treasury, Operations, Risk Management, Finance, Compliance, and Technology to gather, analyze, validate, and document business, functional, technical, and non-functional requirements
* Analyze and optimize the end-to-end FX trade lifecycle, including trade capture, pricing, confirmations, settlements, treasury operations, market risk, accounting, and regulatory reporting to improve automation, scalability, and operational efficiency
* Define business and integration requirements supporting connectivity between enterprise trading platforms and downstream systems using SWIFT financial messaging (MT300, MT103, MT202), REST APIs, microservices, and modern enterprise integration patterns
* Collaborate with business leaders, architects, developers, QA teams, infrastructure teams, and third-party vendors throughout platform selection, solution design, implementation, testing, migration, and production deployment
* Support business process reengineering, solution design, data mapping, migration planning, testing strategy, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), production readiness, and post-production stabilization activities
* Develop high-quality project artifacts including business requirements documents (BRDs), functional specifications, process flows, user stories, use cases, data mapping documents, test scenarios, and implementation documentation
* Facilitate stakeholder workshops, business process reviews, and solution design sessions while ensuring alignment across technical and business teams
* Mentor junior Business Analysts, promote business analysis best practices, and contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives across the project organization
