What is a syntax job?

Syntax jobs generally refer to roles that involve the study, analysis, or implementation of syntax, which is the set of rules that governs the structure of sentences in a language. These jobs are most common in fields such as linguistics, computational linguistics, natural language processing (NLP), and computer science, where professionals analyze how words and phrases are organized to convey meaning. Tasks may include designing grammars for programming languages, developing language processing algorithms, or performing linguistic research. Syntax specialists often work in academia, tech companies, or research institutions. The specific responsibilities vary based on the industry and focus area.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a syntax specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Syntax Specialist (such as a linguist or computational linguist specializing in syntax), you need a strong background in linguistics, particularly syntactic theory, and typically a relevant degree such as linguistics or computational linguistics. Familiarity with tools like treebanking software, syntactic parsers, and programming languages (e.g., Python, R) is often required, along with knowledge of annotation standards. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for analyzing language data and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate syntactic analysis, contribute to language technology development, and support effective research outcomes.

What are some typical challenges faced by syntax analysts when working with large codebases?

Syntax Analysts often encounter challenges such as deciphering inconsistent coding styles, managing legacy code with outdated syntax, and ensuring that syntax rules are uniformly applied across large, collaborative projects. Maintaining code readability and preventing syntax-related errors requires close attention to detail and frequent communication with developers. Regular code reviews and utilizing automated syntax-checking tools can help mitigate these challenges and keep the workflow efficient.

Job description

About Syntax Data

Syntax Data is a financial data and technology company supporting direct indexing solutions, custom index development, and financial data products. Through Syntax Direct, our platform enables wealth managers and advisors to create highly customized, tax-aware, transparent index strategies at scale. Syntax also works with asset managers, ETF issuers, wealth platforms, and other financial institutions to support index-based products, custom index solutions, and broader investment use cases.

About the Role

Syntax Data is building its client support function as its cutting-edge Syntax Direct continues to gain market adoption. This is a ground-floor opportunity to join the early team supporting a financial technology platform that sits at the intersection of direct indexing, wealth management, financial data, and client experience. As a Client Solutions Representative, you will help advisors, clients, and platform users get the most out of Syntax Direct by answering questions, supporting onboarding, helping users understand platform functionality, documenting recurring issues, and ensuring inquiries are routed to the right internal teams. You will be part of the team helping Syntax build the playbook for how we support clients at scale. This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is excited by finance, technology, client service, and problem-solving. You do not need to come in as an expert in direct indexing or index methodology. What matters most is curiosity, strong communication skills, attention to detail, comfort learning new technology, and the ability to help clients feel supported while working through questions.

As Syntax grows, this team will play an important role in shaping the client experience. The first group of Client Solutions Representatives will help build the foundation for future support processes, FAQs, documentation, training materials, platform feedback loops, and escalation workflows.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Respond to client, advisor, and platform user inquiries in a timely, professional, and helpful manner.

  • Support onboarding for new users by helping them understand Syntax Direct functionality, workflows, and available resources.

  • Answer common product, platform, and support questions using approved training materials, FAQs, scripts, and internal guidance.

  • Triage more complex questions and escalate them to the appropriate internal teams, including Sales, Index Development, Engineering, or other stakeholders.

  • Maintain accurate records of client interactions, questions, follow-up items, and resolutions in the appropriate CRM, support, or internal tracking tools.

  • Help document recurring client questions, support themes, product feedback, and opportunities to improve FAQs, support guides, onboarding materials, and internal reference resources.

  • Participate in basic QA testing, platform review, and user-experience testing to help identify issues, confirm updates, and provide feedback from the customer perspective.

  • Work cross-functionally with internal teams to help ensure client questions are answered clearly, accurately, and consistently as Syntax Direct and related client initiatives continue to scale.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business, communications, data analytics, investment management, or a related field.

  • 0-3 years of experience in customer support, client service, financial services, fintech, wealth management, investment management, client success, operations, sales support, QA/testing, or a related role.

  • Strong interest in finance and investment management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients, advisors, and internal stakeholders.

  • Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and comfort working through client questions or issues.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or a comparable office suite, along with comfort learning professional software platforms, internal tools, and client support systems.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage follow-up across multiple questions, users, and internal teams.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Empathy, patience, professionalism, and willingness to learn Syntax's products, platform workflows, methodology basics, and client support processes.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Exposure to RIAs, financial advisors, asset managers, ETF issuers, wealth platforms, investment products, or financial data products.

  • Experience supporting customer onboarding, client service, help desk support, product support, customer success, QA testing, or technical account support.

  • Familiarity with CRM, support, ticketing, project management, or documentation tools such as HubSpot, Salesforce, Zendesk, Jira, or similar platforms, with HubSpot experience preferred.

  • Experience documenting customer questions, support trends, resolutions, or product feedback.

  • Interest in direct indexing, index methodology, portfolio construction, financial technology, wealth management, or helping build scalable client support processes as a business grows.

$65,000 - $80,000 a year
