Music Director job at Beth El Synagogue. Saint Louis, MO.

Beth El Synagogue in St. Louis Park, Minnesota is a vibrant, egalitarian, intergenerational Conservative congregation of 1000 families. As we strive to be a singing congregation, we are looking to utilize power of music to build a kehillah kedosha. To that end, we are excited to establish a new position, a fullโ€‘time Music Director.

With passion and compassion, humility and piety, the Music Director will help members find their own voice, find meaning in Jewish living and deepen their ties to one another, to Am Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael, and to the Holy One of Blessing.

Our ideal candidate is a creative, people person with a love of Jewish music. On and off the bima, they have a spirit that lifts with joy, comforts with warmth, and is an engaging presence. The candidate will specialize in traditional and contemporary Jewish and Israeli music, and possess a deep knowledge of Torah, Hebrew, and liturgy. They are an effective songโ€‘leader, and a strong musician playing instruments such as guitar and/or piano. With strong organizational skills, they can see initiatives through from start to finish.

Embracing the diversity of the modern Jewish community, they are to be integrated into the life of the congregation and a valued, collaborative partner with the clergy team, synagogue staff and lay leadership.

Professional duties include:

God
  • Collaborate with the other musically oriented clergy to create soulful davening that brings us to tears and to sing out loud, to dance and to meditate in silence.
  • Serve as the primary shaliach/shelichat tzibbur on shabbat, chagim and yamim noraim. Participate in, lead, and serve as a resource for daily minyan.
  • Add to and enhance the capabilities of synagogue members, young and old, to lead and participate in tโ€™filot and to share the bima with these leaders with pride.
  • Maintain and further develop Yad Hazakkah, our Torah, Haftarah, and Megillah readers program.
Torah
  • Coordinate closely with the Bโ€™nai Mitzvah Program Director and tutoring staff, to ensure the bโ€™nai mitzvah student is well prepared to lead tefilot and inspired to continue following their B Mitzvah.
  • Teaches and organizes learning opportunities for teens and adults such as Adult Bโ€™nai Mitzvah classes, Torah and Megillah trope, classes on Jewish music, etc.
  • Serve as a Beth El presence at the Talmud Torah of Minneapolis (our community Hebrew school), the Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School, Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, Herzl Camp and other local Jewish organizations.
Israel (Community)
  • Oversee the creation of musicโ€‘oriented chavurot, the congregational choir and the development of other youth and adult singing groups.
  • Collaborate with other clergy in creating meaningful Shabbat and holiday programming such as the annual Shabbat Shira programming, Purim โ€œExtravaganza,โ€ Second Seder, etc.
  • Coordinate, develop, lead and/or oversee Beth El Music and Arts (BEMA) programming and staff.
Compensation

The position offers a competitive salary of $95,000 to $115,000 (depending on experience) and is eligible for a generous paid time off allowance as well as an employer subsidized medical/dental/vision options, disability benefit, and 403b retirement account match.
