Job Description

In this role you will: We are currently seeking a Windows/VmWare Administrator to support our work with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA.

This is a mid-level to senior administrator position that supports the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Infrastructure Services Division's (ISD) Operating Systems Operations Section (OSOS) by performing 24X7X365 administration and maintenance activities on various Windows or Unix servers in use at the USPTO. The servers supported are located in both production and test data centers located on the USPTO campus. Additional remote support is provided for systems located at the USPTO Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Data Center located in Pennsylvania. The individual filling this position must be a self-motivated person able to work independently without direct supervision. They will also work closely with application developers for installation, configuration and support of various applications hosted on the Windows or Unix systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Migration and Management of virtual machines within VMware/ESX environment
  • Upgrade of VMware environment following established SOP
  • Ensuring that the PTO receives the highest quality support possible for their server equipment by providing customer focused service with a high attention to detail.
  • Performing routine server maintenance to include installation of hardware and OS patches, hotfixes, configuration changes, updates, etc.
  • Monitoring the USPTO ITSM (Remedy) problem reporting system and responding to problem reports according to established procedures and guidelines.
  • Performing advanced isolation and resolution of problems associated with the servers to include diagnosing and resolving hardware related issues and isolating and resolving OS related issues.
  • Performing domain infrastructure administrative tasks to include:
    • Group Policy Maintenance. Knowledge of Quest Active Roles Server is a plus.
    • Providing configuration of and access to shared resources
    • Restoration of user and system files
    • Administration of Clustered servers.
  • Supporting application developers/vendors in the deployment of new systems or application updates.
  • Supporting USPTO C&A efforts by performing security scans on various systems.
  • Monitoring system performance and making recommendations on ways to improve it.
  • Using provided documentation to baseline new virtual and physical systems.
  • Interfacing directly with contract task leads to receive tasks and provide updated status information.
  • Provide weekly reports identifying all significant activities as well as issues or risks affecting the ability to provide support to the customer.
  • Analyzing system logs and identifying potential issues with computer systems.
  • Performing routine audits of systems and software.
  • Performing system and/or file restorations.
  • Installing and configuring new hardware and software.
  • Adding, removing, or updating user account information, resetting passwords, etc.
  • System performance tuning in conjunction with Capacity Planning and Monitoring Groups.
  • Ensuring that the network infrastructure servers are up and running in optimal state.
Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications (Education, Certifications, Experience, Skills)

  • Must be open to the following shift:
    • Monday - Friday: 5am - 2pm
  • 3-5 years of general Windows or Unix Administration experience is required of which 1 year experience must be with troubleshooting advanced Windows or Unix OS/hardware related issues and patching Windows servers.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with VMware/ESX environment.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with and supporting Microsoft Windows Server 2000/2003/2008/2012 server and Active Directory.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with and supporting RAID configuration.
  • 3-5 years of experience with Server hardware/OS/software installation and configuration.
  • 3-5 years of experience with Windows server administration in a large (5,000+) user environment.
  • Experience working with Group Policy Administration.
  • Experience working with and support Symantec Endpoint Protection.
  • Server administration in a large (5,000+) user environment is a plus.
  • VMWare Certification is a plus.
  • Enterprise Backup Solutions (Symantec Veritas NetBackup) is a plus.
  • Altiris (Symantec Management Platform) is a plus.
  • SAN/NAS Attached Server Infrastructure is a plus
  • Knowledge of Dell Server hardware Solutions (Dell Open Manage) is a plus
  • MCSE, MCITP, MCP, MCSA or VCP Certifications are a plus.
