We are seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Database Administrator to join a research and trading development team responsible for developing and deploying leading edge mission critical financial trading applications. You will join in the management of proprietary and Sybase database systems to that facilitate management of large scale time series databases. As this environment continues to grow we seek a Database Administrator to work on all aspects of our databases, from high performance online transaction processing (2000tps) to data warehousing (250G+ servers) issues. This is a fast-paced/demanding environment. The user base consists of 20 technical and 20 non-technical users. SCM's selective hiring process considers only highly talented individuals with a history of exceptional professional and academic achievement, and solid real-world experience.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Administer, maintain, monitor, and optimize database systems to ensure performance, availability, and reliability.
  • Design and support relational database structures using sound database design principles and best practices.
  • Perform database backup, restore, disaster recovery planning, and recovery operations.
  • Conduct capacity planning and proactively manage storage growth and infrastructure needs.
  • Monitor and tune database and server performance to maximize efficiency and system responsiveness.
  • Manage database security, including user administration, permissions, and access controls.
  • Troubleshoot database issues and perform root-cause analysis for incidents and performance bottlenecks.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and automation tools for administration and monitoring tasks.
  • Support and administer alternative data storage technologies and platforms.
  • Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to ensure database solutions align with business and technical requirements.

Requirements:
  • Solid understanding of SQL, relational database fundamentals, and database design principles.
  • Experience administering SAP ASE (Sybase/SAP) or other enterprise database systems.
  • Strong experience with database platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server and/or Sybase/SAP ASE.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Backup and Restore procedures
    • Capacity Planning
    • Server Performance Tuning
    • User Administration and Security Management
  • Experience with database performance monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of programming in both lower-level languages and scripting languages for automation and tooling.
  • Ability to administer and support alternative data storage technologies including:
    • Kafka
    • PostgreSQL
    • MySQL
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

The base pay for this position is anticipated to be between $100,000 and $200,000 per year. The anticipated annual base pay range is current as of the time this job post was generated. This position is eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits such as bonus, health and dental plans and 401(k) contributions, which includes a discretionary profit sharing program. An employee's bonus and related compensation benefits can be a significant portion of total compensation. Actual compensation for successful candidates will be carefully determined based on a number of factors, including their skills, qualifications and experience.
