Switcher Driver information

What is a switcher driver?

Switcher Drivers, also known as yard drivers or yard jockeys, are professionals responsible for moving trailers and containers within a freight yard, warehouse, or distribution center. They use specialized vehicles called yard trucks or terminal tractors to position trailers for loading and unloading. Unlike long-haul truck drivers, Switcher Drivers generally work within a confined area and do not drive on public roads. Their role is critical for maintaining smooth operations and minimizing delays in the supply chain. They may also perform basic inspections and ensure trailers are properly secured.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a switcher driver?

To thrive as a Switcher Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), knowledge of yard operations, and experience maneuvering trailers or trucks in tight spaces. Familiarity with yard management systems, two-way radios, and basic vehicle inspection procedures is typically required. Attention to detail, safety awareness, and strong communication skills help a switcher driver excel in coordinating with warehouse staff and managing multiple tasks. These abilities are crucial for ensuring efficient yard flow, preventing accidents, and supporting overall logistics operations.

What are the typical challenges faced by switcher drivers and how can they be addressed?

Switcher Drivers often face challenges such as working in fast-paced environments with tight schedules, navigating busy or confined yard spaces, and coordinating with multiple team members like warehouse staff and dispatchers. Staying organized and maintaining clear communication are key to managing these demands. Additionally, strong attention to safety protocols helps prevent accidents, especially when maneuvering large vehicles in close quarters. Many companies provide ongoing training and support to help Switcher Drivers stay up-to-date with best practices and equipment handling.

Job description

Local CDL-A Yard & Shuttle Driver — Home Daily

If you are trying to get off the road and actually sleep in your own bed every day, we have an opening on a local dedicated bakery fleet. This is an active, fast-paced job where you'll handle a mix of short-distance shuttling and yard switching instead of just sitting behind the wheel all shift.

This operation runs on a zero-margin timeline. Any delivery delays or on-site accidents will instantly halt production for the entire facility. Because things are so tight, we can't take trainees or team drivers, you have to be ready to run completely solo on day one.

What You'll Earn

Hourly Base: Start at a flat $21.50 per hour.

Stop Incentives: Earn an extra $45.00 unload pay added directly to your clock for every stop completed.

Weekly Gross: Drivers on this account average a steady $1,300 gross every single week.

The Route & Physical Demands

The Shuttle Loop: You will run short-haul segments between the plant and the distribution center, which sit roughly 7 miles apart.

Yard Work: You are responsible for swapping, sealing, and locking down trailers at both locations.

Backup Runs: If yard work slows down, you might take a quick local store delivery to secure your full shift hours.

The Labor: This is a high-stamina role. You will manage live loads and full manual unloads, using a built-in liftgate to roll out wheeled bread trays and delivery carts.

Your Schedule & Home Time

Home Daily: 100% Home Daily. Complete your turns and head straight back to your own house after every shift.

The Shift: Dedicated NIGHT SHIFT run. You must be completely comfortable with steady night driving and technical backing environments.

Calendar Setup: Weekend dispatch is standard. Days off might be split when you first start, but you can use your seniority over time to bid on consecutive off-days. Extra shifts are readily available if you want to pull in more hours.

Holidays & Facility Perks: Guaranteed completely off on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Secure onsite parking is provided for both your personal vehicle and your tractor.

What It Takes to Qualify

Hiring Boundary: Must live within 50 miles of our Phoenix terminal hub (Zip Code: 85043).

Experience Tracks: No trainees allowed. You need at least 6 months of OTR within the last year, or 12 months of OTR within the last 5 years. Local Class A tractor-trailer or hostling experience counts directly.

Credentials: Valid Class A CDL and a current DOT Medical Card. No special endorsements required.

Background Check: Maximum of 4 driving jobs in the past year and zero major preventable accidents within the last 5 years.

Screening: Must pass a mandatory hair and urine drug analysis.

Not SAP Friendly.

Company Benefits

Full corporate benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance options, a company-matching 401(k) retirement plan active after 60 days on the job, paid time off, and 24/7 account-specific dispatch assistance.
