About Sutter Coast Hospital

Sutter Coast Hospital is a community-based, not-for-profit hospital located in Crescent City, Del Norte County, California. It also extends its services to parts of Curry County, Oregon where this position will reside in Brookings. As part of the Sutter Health network, this 49-bed acute care hospital offers a range of essential healthcare services. A local volunteer board of community leaders and healthcare professionals ensures that the hospital's decisions align with the needs of the community. Sutter Coast provides emergency care with a 24/7 department, general surgery procedures, a birthing center, an intensive care unit (ICU), inpatient care, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, and rehabilitation services. The hospital prioritizes community health through outreach programs, education, and initiatives tailored to the area's needs.

Community Information

Practice Where Coastal Serenity Meets Purposeful Medicine

Located along the breathtaking Southern Oregon coast, Brookings offers a rare opportunity to build a meaningful Internal Medicine practice in a truly unique setting. With a population of approximately 6,500, this tight-knit community sits just north of the California border and is supported by Sutter Coast Hospital in nearby Crescent City—serving as the primary medical hub for a broad, rural patient population.

A Fulfilling Internal Medicine Practice

As an Internal Medicine physician in the Brookings area, you'll enjoy a diverse and rewarding clinical experience:

  • Broad scope of practice with a mix of chronic disease management, preventive care, and complex case coordination
  • Opportunity to care for an underserved, medically diverse population, making a tangible impact on community health
  • Close collaboration with Sutter Coast Hospital (49-bed acute care facility) providing inpatient, ED, and specialty support
  • Access to on-site and affiliated services including imaging, lab, rehabilitation, and telehealth specialty consults
  • A collegial, team-based environment where providers are highly valued and autonomy is supported

This setting allows you to practice high-quality, relationship-driven medicine without the saturation and fragmentation of urban systems.

Exceptional Quality of Life

  • Outdoor Living: Brookings is known for its mild climate—often called the "Banana Belt" of Oregon—and its abundance of outdoor recreation. Residents enjoy miles of rugged coastline, scenic ocean views, hiking in nearby redwood forests, and access to the Chetco River for fishing, kayaking, and rafting.
  • Community & Culture: Despite its small size, Brookings offers a vibrant local culture with events like the Azalea Festival, seasonal farmers markets, and art walks. The community is welcoming and tight-knit, fostering strong personal and professional connections.
  • Education & Family Living: Brookings provides a family-friendly environment with local schools, safe neighborhoods, and a slower pace of life that appeals to those seeking balance. Nearby educational institutions and community programs support lifelong learning and engagement.
  • Dining & Amenities: Enjoy fresh coastal cuisine, local cafés, and boutique shops, all within a relaxed, uncrowded setting. While Brookings offers essential conveniences, larger retail and cultural amenities are easily accessible in nearby Crescent City or within a scenic drive along the coast.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

This is more than a job—it's a chance to:

  • Practice impactful Internal Medicine in a rural, high-need community
  • Be part of a respected, mission-driven health system
  • Achieve a level of work-life balance rarely found in larger markets
  • Build lasting relationships with patients and colleagues alike
