Sustaining Engineer Intern information

What does a sustaining engineer intern do?

A Sustaining Engineer Intern assists experienced engineers in maintaining and improving existing products or systems. Their tasks may include troubleshooting issues, implementing minor design changes, supporting production teams, and documenting technical solutions. The goal is to ensure the continued performance, reliability, and quality of products after their initial release. This role offers hands-on experience with real-world engineering problems and helps interns develop practical problem-solving skills.

What types of projects and tasks can a sustaining engineer intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Sustaining Engineer Intern, you will typically be involved in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving issues with existing products or systems. Your daily tasks may include analyzing customer-reported problems, collaborating with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing and quality assurance, and developing solutions or process improvements. You may also help document fixes and support teams in implementing changes. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering challenges and an understanding of how products are maintained and improved after launch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sustaining engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustaining Engineer Intern, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and relevant coursework in your engineering discipline. Familiarity with tools such as CAD software, issue tracking systems, and basic statistical analysis is often required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude help interns effectively collaborate with teams and address product issues. These skills ensure that product quality is maintained and technical challenges are resolved efficiently during the internship.

What is the difference between Sustaining Engineer Intern vs Mechanical Engineering Intern?

Our turnkey service capabilities provide our customers with efficiency, consistency, attention to detail and safe execution. The QISG team brings together Engineering, Safety, Quality, Material Procurement, QA/QC, Right-of-Way Acquisition, Scheduling, Environmental Planning, Permitting, Title and Land Management expertise that ensure outstanding results for our clients.

About this Role

At QISG, our Transmission Line teams play a vital role in the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of power across communities and regions. As an intern, you'll work alongside experienced engineers and project managers who design, build, maintain, and upgrade high-voltage transmission infrastructure that supports the backbone of the electric grid. You'll gain hands-on experience with both traditional engineering methods and the latest industry innovations, helping deliver sustainable, cost-effective, and reliable solutions for our customers.

What You'll Do
  • Assist engineers with all aspects of overhead transmission line design, including PLS-CADD modeling, line routing, and structure analysis.
  • Support drafting and mapping using AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS, or similar software.
  • Implement engineering redlines and ensure drawing accuracy.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations, such as sag-tension analysis and pole loading checks, under supervision.
  • Help prepare documentation, reports, and design packages for project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop and refine engineering solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, field data collection, and technical meetings.
  • Maintain organized records of design data, drawings, and project notes.
  • Work approximately 40 hours per week during the internship period.
What You'll Bring

Required Experience and Education:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Preferred Experience and Education:

  • Coursework or familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS, or PLS-CADD.
  • Basic understanding of design codes and standards such as NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and IBC.

Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and interest in power delivery systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative in a fast-paced engineering environment.
What You'll Get

As an intern, you'll gain hands-on experience, mentorship from industry professionals, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to real projects. You'll also build valuable skills and connections to support your future career.
