Collaborating closely with manufacturing, quality, and customer support teams is essential to gather data and implement effective solutions. Additionally, engineers must ensure that any changes made to existing products comply with regulatory standards and do not introduce new issues, making strong problem-solving and communication skills critical to success in this role.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Sustaining electrical engineers typically earn salaries below $200,000 annually, with higher earnings possible in executive or specialized roles such as senior engineering managers or those working in high-cost regions or industries like aerospace or defense. Achieving a $500,000 salary usually requires advanced positions, extensive experience, or additional responsibilities beyond standard engineering roles.

What are Sustaining Electrical Engineers?

Sustaining Electrical Engineers are professionals responsible for maintaining, improving, and supporting existing electrical products or systems throughout their lifecycle. They troubleshoot issues, implement design modifications, and work to ensure reliability and compliance with standards. Their role often involves collaborating with manufacturing, quality, and design teams to resolve technical problems and extend product longevity. Sustaining Electrical Engineers play a crucial role in minimizing downtime, reducing costs, and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Can I make 200K as an electrical engineer?

Sustaining electrical engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills, and certifications such as PE licensure can potentially earn salaries around or above $200,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or specialized industries like power systems or aerospace. However, typical salaries vary widely based on location, industry, and experience level, with many earning between $80,000 and $150,000 at mid-career stages.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior electrical engineers, especially those in high-demand industries like aerospace, semiconductor, or energy, can earn $300,000 or more annually with extensive experience, advanced skills, and often in managerial or specialized roles. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and certifications such as PE or advanced degrees, and those working in leadership or consulting positions tend to have higher salaries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sustaining Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustaining Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, troubleshooting, and experience with manufacturing or product support, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as oscilloscopes, PCB design software (like Altium or OrCAD), and root cause analysis methodologies, as well as certifications like Six Sigma, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work cross-functionally help you excel in diagnosing and resolving ongoing product issues. These skills and qualifications are vital for maintaining product reliability, minimizing downtime, and ensuring customer satisfaction in fast-paced production environments.

What is the difference between Sustaining Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectSustaining Electrical EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
Primary FocusMaintaining and improving existing electrical products and systemsDesigning new electrical systems and products from scratch
Work EnvironmentOften in manufacturing, production support, or product maintenancePrimarily in R&D, product development, or engineering design teams
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; experience with product lifecycle managementBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; strong design and CAD skills

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, the Sustaining Electrical Engineer focuses on supporting and improving existing products, whereas the Electrical Design Engineer is involved in creating new electrical systems. The roles differ mainly in their scope—maintenance versus development—though they share similar educational backgrounds and industry environments.
