The Labor and Delivery Unit, with 9 OB emergency bays, 8 LDR rooms, 2 OR suites, and a 2-bay recovery area, provides 24/7 care for pregnant women at 20 weeks or greater gestation, including routine or high-risk obstetrical cases and Cesarean sections, with CRNAs available round-the-clock. The unit follows AWHONN standards of care and prioritizes compassionate, family-centered healthcare for a safe birthing experience.

Tech Essential Job Duties:

  1. Assumes responsibility for patient care within the scope of experience and practice.
  2. Applies knowledge of asepsis and surgical techniques when carrying out the activities of an operating room tech (scrubbing, handling instruments, sponges, etc.).
    • Assists with preparation of the OR for the procedure (including supply and equipment set-up).
    • Assists the OR Team in preparing the patient for the procedure (positioning, prepping, draping) according to established sterile field criteria.
    • Checks instruments and equipment for operational efficiency and defects prior to and following a procedure. Reports defects to the charge nurse.
    • Assists surgeon/RN in short term plan of care which insures medical/surgical asepsis/safety to patient.
    • Assists surgeon under his/her direct supervision. Assisting is limited to performing the following: suctioning, sponging, retracting, stapling, clamping and tying vessels.
    • Anticipates/responds to surgeon's needs.
    • Labels specimens. Places specimens in proper solution for transport to the Lab.
    • Cleans or assists with cleaning/sterilizing following a procedure utilizing disinfectant or proper method of sterilization.
    • Assists with clean-up of rooms between cases and at the end of the schedule (bagging soiled linen, disposal of gloves and debris, transporting soiled instruments to Soiled Utility Room, etc.).
    • Assists the surgeon with needs for instruments, sutures, sponges, etc. according to technique, procedure and special requirements.
  1. Works under direction of the RN to perform duties as assigned:
    • Empties JP drains, hemovacs, and N/G drainage.
    • Takes vital signs.
    • Answers patients' call lights.
    • Performs post-procedure checks following initial nurse assessment.
    • Refers questions about diagnosis, medications, tests/procedures, and instructions in preparation to discharge to the licensed staff.
  2. Applies knowledge of basic clerical skills.
    • Answers telephone, relays messages to appropriate persons.  Notifies RN of diagnostic test results communicated as abnormal.
    • Utilizes the CRT correctly to requisition; sends messages; enters patient charges, lab values, etc.
    • Routes/dismantles charts when patients are transferred or discharged.
    • Copies patient care data accurately into the patient record as directed by the RN.
    • Transcribes physician orders.
    • Transcribes patient care data onto patient care kardex as directed by the RN.
    • Schedules patient appointments as directed by the RN.
    • Faxes all written orders to Pharmacy.

Education, Training & Experience

  • Must have graduated from an accredited surgical technology program
  • Must have active CST certification
  • Must have active BLS certification
  • Must be eligible to sit for the certification and as a new graduate has 6 months to complete.
