Responsibilities
  • The Scrub technician professional responsibilities within their scope of practice:
  • Abides by and enforce all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's view.
  • Adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality.
  • Maintains regular and prompt attendance.
  • Practices family centered care according to policies.
  • Assists with orientation of new employees as assigned.
  • Available in hospital within thirty to forty-five (30 - 45) minutes of call.
  • Requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics when:
  • Moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety
  • Moving equipment that is necessary to perform essential functions.
  • Supports the nursing team through: Data collection, provision of patient care, implementation of nursing interventions for patients and families as directed by the RN.
  • Provides direct patient care according to unit specific competencies:
  • Identifies, and monitors medications administered from the sterile field.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency patient situations.
  • Performs skilled procedures and can state the purpose, rationale, precautions and observations related to that procedure.
  • Utilizes a personal computer or terminal to access the Hospital Information System.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • The Scrub technician communication responsibilities
  • Communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone.
  • Responds to overhead pages
  • Notifies the Charge Nurse when leaving the unit.
  • The Scrub Technician documentation responsibilities:
  • Maintains accurate and complete records by: Completing unit education card, completing in-service attendance sheet, completing sterilizer strips, updates Surgeon Preference Cards
  • Updates Surgeon Preference Cards
  • The Scrub Technician citizenship responsibilities:
  • Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict.
  • Cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit.
  • Completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements.
  • Utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job.
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
  • Accepts reassignment to other areas of Surgical Services with a positive attitude.
  • The Scrub Technician responsibilities for providing age specific care:
  • Demonstrating the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations:
  • Neonate, Infant-Toddler/Preschool, School age/Adolescent, Reproductive Age, Post/Peri Menopausal
  • The Scrub Technician responsibilities for unit/departmental specific:
  • Utilizes the principles of aseptic practice and initiates corrective action when errors occur.
  • Uses technically advanced equipment.
  • Participates in evaluation of new products
  • Provides appropriate care to specimens and cultures as directed by set Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs scrub duties.
  • Establishes and maintains sterile field.
  • Inspects sterile items for contamination before opening.
  • Contributes to and maintains unit specific quality control logs
  • Adheres to electrosurgical safety Policy and Procedures.
  • Performs sponge and sharp counts, initiates corrective actions when counts are incorrect; communicates/documents results of counts according to facility policy.
  • Decontaminates instruments according to unit protocols.
  • Participates in Universal Protocol
  • Labels medications on the sterile field according to Policy
  • Case preparation includes use of physician preference cards
  • Insure all supplies and instruments required for case are available
  • Participates in the OR recycle/reprocessing program
  • Demonstrates and awareness of Fire/Laser Safety in the OR
  • Utilizes downtime between cases effectively to support unit cleanliness, appropriate stock levels, and extra duty assignments
  • Actively participates in unit based educational activities. (i.e. role playing or through demonstration)
  • Demonstrates on a daily basis an understanding of Team Work
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as assigned

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.
