How do you become a surgery internship?

To become a surgery intern, candidates typically complete a bachelor's degree followed by medical school, earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Afterward, they must pass licensing exams and apply for a surgical internship or residency program, which provides hands-on training in surgical procedures and patient care under supervision.

Job description

Global Surgery Fellow

The SEAL Global Surgery Fellowship is a non-ACGME accredited position. The fellow will serve as a staff surgeon, participating in daily rounds, taking call, and providing clinical care in collaboration with local medical teams.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the fellow will play a role in capacity building at the partner hospital. This includes training medical students, interns, and residents through bedside teaching, case discussions, and formal educational sessions. The fellow will also be responsible for developing and delivering training modules tailored to the needs identified by local partners. These may include areas such as endoscopy, trauma care, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and other relevant topics.

The fellow will assess resource and equipment needs at the site and act as a liaison with ETSU leadership to facilitate the acquisition of necessary tools, skills, or support. They are also expected to identify or contribute to ongoing research initiatives at the host site and support ETSU medical students or residents during their rotations.

Finally, the fellow is encouraged to contribute innovative solutions to improve access to surgical care in resource-limited settings. This includes supporting local leadership development, quality improvement initiatives, and sustainability efforts in alignment with the host hospital and ETSU's global health mission.

Requirements:

  • US Board eligible or US board-certified surgeons
  • Previous global health or global surgery experience strongly preferred
  • Flexibility, cultural humility, and ability to work in resource-limited settings
  • Resume
  • Personal Statement (do not exceed 500 words)
