Responsibilities

Unit Overview (ASC)
The GW Hospital Ambulatory Surgery Center provides same-day procedures in general surgery, orthopedics, GI, plastics, and ENT. The unit emphasizes:

  • Efficient, outpatient, procedure-focused care
  • Strong teamwork among surgeons, anesthesiologists, RNs, techs, and support staff
  • Standardized workflows, safety checklists, and evidence-based practices

Position Summary
The Surgical Technologist at the Ambulatory Surgery Center supports safe, efficient outpatient surgery by preparing the OR, maintaining sterility, and anticipating surgeons' needs. This role suits a detail-oriented tech who enjoys a fast-paced, scheduled-case setting and close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing in an academic medical center.

Main Responsibilities

  • Prepare the OR, verify case carts, and set up supplies
  • Maintain aseptic technique and patient safety
  • Serve as scrub tech, anticipating needs and handling instruments/specimens
  • Assist with positioning and basic OR equipment
  • Support room turnover and supply management
  • Document care and participate in quality/safety initiatives
  • Demonstrate professionalism and clear communication with the care team

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Basic knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instruments, and OR safety standards.
  • Strong communication skills for effective teamwork.

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST).
  • At least 1 year of experience in an operating room or ASC.
