What are some common projects or responsibilities a Surface Pattern Designer handles on a daily basis?

As a Surface Pattern Designer, you'll typically work on creating repeat patterns and print designs for products such as textiles, wallpapers, apparel, or home goods. Daily tasks may involve researching trends, sketching new ideas, digitizing artwork, and refining designs based on client or team feedback. You may also prepare files for production, collaborate with product developers, and present concepts to internal stakeholders or clients. This variety ensures every day is creative and allows you to see the direct impact of your designs on finished products.

What does a surface pattern designer do?

A surface pattern designer creates repeating or non-repeating designs for surfaces such as textiles, wallpapers, and product packaging. They use digital tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to develop patterns that are visually appealing and suitable for manufacturing or printing processes.

How do you become a surface pattern designer?

To become a surface pattern designer, you typically need a background in graphic design, illustration, or fine arts, along with proficiency in design software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. Building a strong portfolio showcasing your pattern work, gaining experience through internships or freelance projects, and understanding trends and manufacturing processes are essential steps in establishing a career in this field.

Is surface pattern design oversaturated?

Surface pattern design is a competitive field, but opportunities remain for skilled designers with strong portfolios, unique styles, and proficiency in tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Success often depends on niche specialization, networking, and staying current with industry trends, rather than market saturation alone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Surface Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surface Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, color theory, and pattern creation, often supported by a degree in graphic design, textile design, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD tools is crucial, and familiarity with print production methods can be beneficial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help designers collaborate effectively with teams and clients. These abilities ensure the creation of appealing, commercially viable patterns that meet client objectives and production requirements.

Is AI taking over surface pattern design?

AI is increasingly used as a tool in surface pattern design to generate ideas and assist with repetitive tasks, but it does not replace the creativity and artistic skills of a professional surface pattern designer. Designers often use AI to enhance their workflow, combining technology with traditional skills to produce unique patterns. Success in this field still relies on a strong understanding of design principles, software proficiency, and originality.

Job description

AWS Marketplace and Partner Services (AMPS) is revolutionizing how software and services are discovered, bought, sold, and deployed in the cloud. As the premier digital catalog for AWS, we enable millions of customers to find and purchase software solutions from thousands of independent software vendors (ISVs), while empowering partners to build, scale, and grow their cloud businesses. We're the critical bridge in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing technology ecosystems, driving billions in commerce annually.
We're seeking a Principal UX Designer to lead the design vision for our marketplace and partner platform experiences

This is a rare opportunity to shape how enterprise software is bought and sold at global scale. You'll define experience strategies that span our entire ecosystem - AWS Marketplace, Partner Central, and complete buyer journeys from discovery through procurement and deployment - transforming complex workflows into intuitive experiences and empowering ISV partners with elegant tools to manage and grow their businesses on AWS.
As a Principal Designer, you will not only drive design at the highest levels of complexity but also influence product and business strategy, mentor designers across the organization, and set new standards for B2B marketplace experiences. You'll partner closely with product management, engineering, business development, and sales leadership to push the boundaries of what's possible in enterprise commerce and partner enablement.
Key job responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end UX vision and strategy across AWS Marketplace, Partner Central, and complete buyer journeys spanning discovery, procurement, and deployment, ensuring experiences are intuitive, scalable, and drive measurable business outcomes for thousands of partners and millions of customers
- Set the bar for B2B marketplace design by translating complex procurement, licensing, and partner management workflows into coherent, human-centered experiences that build trust and accelerate adoption
- Influence product and business direction, working with senior leadership to identify opportunities where design innovation can transform buyer, seller, and partner outcomes across the AMPS ecosystem
- Define and drive cross-service design standards including interaction models, experience principles, design systems, and reusable patterns that ensure consistency across AWS Marketplace, Partner Central, and adjacent partner surfaces
- Lead end-to-end design from strategy through execution: create user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and interactive prototypes that effectively communicate detailed interaction behaviors
- Mentor and elevate designers across the organization, coaching teams and raising the overall quality of craft, storytelling, and execution
- Analyze buyer, seller, and partner problems using market research, data, user feedback, and usability findings to create on-brand design solutions that meet business goals and requirements
- Be a thought leader and design advocate, evangelizing design excellence and customer-centric thinking through compelling storytelling and cross-org collaboration
- Present design work to user experience teams, product stakeholders, and executive leadership for review, feedback, and alignment
- Partner with engineering teams to bring experiences to life: provide design specifications, create assets, review implementations, and ensure quality through delivery
A day in the life
As a Principal UX Designer for AMPS, you'll own design across AWS Marketplace, Partner Central, and complete buyer journeys that impact millions of customers and thousands of partners worldwide

Your work spans the full breadth of our ecosystem - from how buyers discover and procure software, to how partners onboard, manage listings, and grow their businesses on AWS. You'll lead design strategy from concept through execution, creating user flows, prototypes, and high-fidelity specifications that set the standard for marketplace and B2B experiences.
You'll partner with product and engineering leaders to influence roadmaps and drive strategic decisions. You'll lead design critiques and mentor designers across the organization, elevating craft and raising the bar for quality

You'll regularly present design work to senior leadership, translating customer and partner insights into compelling design solutions that solve complex business challenges. You must be responsive, flexible, and thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment while delivering exceptional design at enterprise scale.
About the team
The AMPS UX team is a passionate group of designers and researchers dedicated to raising the bar on marketplace and enterprise B2B experiences. We work across the entire ecosystem - from buyer discovery and procurement to seller operations and partner enablement

Our creative work impacts millions of customers making critical software purchasing decisions and thousands of ISV partners building their businesses on AWS.
We operate in a fast-paced, startup-like environment with the resources and scale of Amazon. We value customer obsession, bias for action, collaboration, and learning from experimentation. We hire people who bring their authentic selves to work and aren't afraid to tackle complex problems

We love diverse perspectives, moving fast in evolving environments, and championing both spoken and unspoken customer needs through objective insights that drive empathy across the organization.
Diverse Experiences
AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn't followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don't let it stop you from applying
