How much do surf nursing jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for surf nursing in the United States is $80,622.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $61,500.00 and $94,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is surf nursing?

Surf nursing is a specialized field of nursing that involves providing medical care and first aid to surfers and individuals at beaches or surf events. Surf nurses are trained to handle ocean-related injuries such as cuts, jellyfish stings, drowning, heat exhaustion, and other emergencies that can occur in marine environments. They often work closely with lifeguards and emergency responders to ensure the safety and well-being of beachgoers. Their role may also include educating the public about surf safety and preventive health measures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a surf nurse?

To thrive as a Surf Nurse, you need strong clinical skills in emergency and trauma care, typically supported by a nursing degree, RN licensure, and experience in outdoor or sports medicine. Familiarity with portable medical equipment, first aid kits, and water rescue tools is essential, along with certifications like CPR, Advanced Life Support (ALS), and possibly lifeguarding. Excellent decision-making, calmness under pressure, and strong communication are vital soft skills for managing incidents on the beach or in aquatic environments. These skills ensure effective, timely medical interventions and promote safety in dynamic, high-risk surf settings.

What are the main challenges surf nurses face when providing medical care in beach environments?

Surf nurses often encounter unique challenges such as working in unpredictable weather conditions, limited access to medical equipment, and treating a wide range of injuries from minor cuts to serious trauma like spinal injuries or drownings. The dynamic beach setting requires quick decision-making, strong physical stamina, and the ability to collaborate closely with lifeguards, emergency responders, and local healthcare facilities. Adapting to rapidly changing situations and maintaining patient safety while outdoors are key aspects of this role.

What is the difference between Surf Nursing vs Lifeguard?

AspectSurf NursingLifeguard
CertificationsBasic life support, first aid, CPR, sometimes advanced medical trainingCPR, first aid, lifeguard certification
Work EnvironmentBeach or surf zones, medical clinics, rescue boatsBeach, pool, or water rescue areas
Employer & IndustryHospitals, clinics, surf resorts, emergency servicesPublic beaches, private pools, water parks

Surf Nursing involves providing medical care in surf and beach environments, often requiring advanced medical certifications. Lifeguards primarily focus on water rescue and safety, with certifications centered on rescue skills. While both roles operate in aquatic settings, Surf Nursing emphasizes medical treatment, whereas Lifeguards focus on prevention and rescue.
