Surf Intern information

What are Surf Interns?

Surf Interns are typically entry-level assistants who work at surf schools, camps, or surf-related organizations. Their responsibilities often include helping instructors during lessons, maintaining surf equipment, assisting with beach safety, and providing general support to ensure smooth operations. This role is ideal for individuals interested in learning more about the surf industry, gaining hands-on experience, and improving their own surfing skills while working in a dynamic, outdoor environment. Surf Internships can also provide networking opportunities and serve as a stepping stone to more advanced positions in the surf industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Surf Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surf Intern, you typically need a basic understanding of surfing techniques, water safety, and first aid, often supported by lifeguard or water safety certifications. Familiarity with surfboards, wetsuits, and scheduling or booking systems is commonly required. Strong communication, enthusiasm, and the ability to work well with diverse groups are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that interns can support surf instructors, foster a safe learning environment, and provide excellent customer service to clients.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for a Surf Intern at a surf school or camp?

As a Surf Intern, you can expect to assist certified instructors during surf lessons, help maintain equipment, and ensure student safety both in and out of the water. You'll also learn about surf instruction methods, ocean safety protocols, and customer service in a dynamic, outdoor environment. The role often provides opportunities to shadow experienced staff, improve your own surfing skills, and gain hands-on experience in event planning and group coordination. Many surf internships offer mentorship and guidance for those interested in pursuing careers as surf instructors or in the outdoor recreation industry.
