Supportive Living Assistant information

What is a supportive living assistant?

Supportive Living Assistants are professionals who help individuals with disabilities, elderly people, or those recovering from illness or injury to live as independently as possible. They assist with daily activities such as personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, and light housekeeping. Supportive Living Assistants also provide companionship, encourage social participation, and may help with transportation or errands. Their goal is to promote dignity, autonomy, and quality of life for the people they support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a supportive living assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Supportive Living Assistant, you need a foundational knowledge of personal care, basic healthcare practices, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with care planning systems, electronic documentation tools, and sometimes CPR or first aid certification is typically required. Compassion, patience, effective communication, and strong problem-solving skills make someone stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring the well-being, dignity, and safety of residents while fostering an environment of trust and support.

What are some common challenges faced by supportive living assistants, and how are they typically addressed?

Supportive Living Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing the diverse needs and abilities of residents, handling emotional or behavioral issues, and balancing multiple responsibilities during their shifts. These challenges are typically addressed through ongoing training, strong communication with team members, and access to support from supervisors. Many organizations also promote regular team meetings and encourage a collaborative environment, ensuring that assistants have the resources and guidance needed to provide high-quality care while maintaining their own well-being.

Supportive Living Care Manager

Location: St. George, Utah
Job Type: Full-Time

Pay: $37,440–$41,600 annually, depending on experience and qualifications

Position Summary

The Supportive Living Care Manager provides recovery-oriented support and case management to adults experiencing substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and housing instability. This position works directly with residents in supportive living homes and in the community, helping them maintain stability, connect with resources, build independent-living skills, and work toward long-term recovery and self-sufficiency.

This is a hands-on position for someone who is compassionate, dependable, organized, and comfortable working independently. It can be a great opportunity for someone newer to the behavioral health field who wants to build experience while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build supportive, professional relationships with residents and provide individualized case management and recovery support.
  • Help residents work toward recovery, housing, treatment, employment, financial, and independent-living goals.
  • Connect residents with behavioral health providers, healthcare, benefits, housing resources, and other community services.
  • Assist residents with maintaining housing and preparing for successful transitions to greater independence.
  • Provide support during crises and coordinate with supervisors, treatment providers, and other appropriate resources.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services and resident progress.
  • Provide approved transportation to appointments and other necessary community activities.
  • Support the safety, cleanliness, and overall stability of assigned supportive living residences.
  • Communicate and coordinate with treatment providers, community partners, house leadership, and other members of the resident's support team.
  • Manage scheduled and unscheduled work time responsibly and follow through on assigned responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Interest in working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, mental health challenges, or housing instability.
  • Experience in behavioral health, recovery services, peer support, case management, or related work is preferred but not required.
  • CPSS (Certified Peer Support Specialist), case management credential, or eligibility to obtain an applicable credential is required.
  • If using personal recovery experience as a qualification or providing peer services, at least one year of stable recovery is required.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to meet organizational driving requirements.
  • Strong communication, organization, and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and appropriate documentation.
  • Must be dependable, self-motivated, willing to learn, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must meet applicable background screening and program requirements.

Work Conditions

  • Full-time position working primarily in supportive living residences and community settings.
  • Some evening and weekend flexibility and occasional on-call support will be required.
  • Must be comfortable working in gender-specific residential settings.
  • Local travel between residences, appointments, and community resources is required.
  • The schedule may include periods between appointments; employees are expected to remain available and use this time productively for resident support, documentation, and other assigned responsibilities.

Benefits

  • Paid time off and paid sick time.
  • Flexible scheduling to support work-life balance while meeting program and resident needs.
  • Opportunity to gain experience and grow within the behavioral health, recovery, and supportive housing fields.
