Job description

Position Purpose

Runs the plant when leadership is not on site, which is most of the time. Owns safety, production and people on their crew. Hired early to participate in commissioning and learn the plant while it is being proven.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the shift crew and own safety, environmental compliance and production performance for the shift.
  • Authorize permits to work, direct hazardous work and act as incident commander until relieved.
  • Direct operating decisions within the approved operating envelope and escalate deviations promptly.
  • Run structured shift handover so that no information is lost between crews.
  • Coach and qualify operators and complete performance and competency assessments.
  • Coordinate with maintenance on breakdowns, permits and planned work executed on shift.
  • Own shift documentation, including logs, batch records and deviation reports.
  • Participate in commissioning, functional testing and dry runs before startup.

Required Qualifications

  • Eight or more years of chemical, biochemical or refinery operations experience with supervisory responsibility.
  • Demonstrated safety leadership and permit to work authority experience.
  • Strong process troubleshooting judgment under time pressure.
  • Willingness to work a twelve hour rotating shift including nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in process technology or equivalent.
  • Fermentation or batch process experience.
  • Prior startup participation.
