About Camp Bette Perot:ย 

Camp Bette Perot, our equestrian camp, offersย sleepawayย camp for girls ages 7-16.ย  We serve approximately 150 campers per week from a variety of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Camp community life includes group living, shared meals, daily activities,ย kapersย (chores), and rest. Campers come to camp independently and are cared for by Counselors. Camp isย locatedย 20 minutes from the small town of Palestine and 2 hours from the large city of Dallas.ย ย 

Equestrianย Summer team leadย work seasonย runsย end of May toย endย of July 2026.ย ย Barnย Managerย work week is typically 13 hours per day for 6 days per week.ย ย 

Job summary:ย ย ย ย 

Theย EQ Summer Team Leadย isย responsible forย assistingย theย Manager of the Equestrian Centerย and staff team with daily operations of sleepaway camp, including program coordination for the camp community,ย EQย summerย staff coaching and mentorship, camp values promotion and relationship-building, and generalย EQย operations and problem-solving support. This position develops relationships with staff and campers andย participatesย fully in daily camp life while serving as a caring mentor, positive role model, and helpful problem solver. The position reports to theย Equestrian Center Manager.ย  Paid staff training is provided at the beginning of the summer and takes place at Camp Bette Perot near Palestine, TX. The positionย staysย onsite.ย

Primary responsibilitiesย include:

  • Champion a positive, inclusive, caring, safe, and fun camp environment and promote the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law, including serving as a positive role model for youth in language, dress, culture of inclusion, behavior, and attitudeย ย 

  • Lead andย participateย inย EQ programย activities and administration, including meals, activities, rest, free time,ย kapersย (chores), staff trainings and meetings, planning and preparation, and cleanupย ย 

  • Assistย with staff training and mentoring and work closely with camp administrative staffย ย 

  • Assistย with coordination of response for any emergencies that ariseย ย 

  • Facilitate positive group relationships, including addressing conflict in constructive waysย ย 

  • Advocate for camper and staff confidence, responsibility, challengeย seeking, teamwork, learning, goal setting, relationship skills, coping strategies, and opportunities for personal and group successย ย 

  • Adhere toย EQย schedule and uphold schedules with othersย ย 

  • Assistย in care ofย equestrianย facilities, equipment, and supplies, including managing resources wiselyย ย 

  • Practice all camp safety standards and emergency procedures and uphold them with othersย ย 

  • Work independently and as part of a team toย facilitateย smooth operation of EQ summer camp programming.ย 

  • Participate in staffย trainingsย and meetings asย requested.ย ย ย ย 

Specific roles available:

  • EQ Senior Teamย Leadย (21+): Supportย EQ staffย belonging, development, effectiveness, wellbeing, and growth through staff training and meetings, mentorship and check-ins, observation and feedback, and tokens of encouragement. Overseeย EQย staff to ensure that campers have a safe, fun, and enriching camp experience through both structured activities and free play.ย Assistย with mediating conflicts and resolving challenges. Collaborate closely withย Equestrianย Center Managerย in the coordination and support of dailyย EQย life.ย ย ย 

Minimumย requirements:ย ย 

  • College degree, or within one year of completing degree.ย 

  • Four yearsโ€™ experience with Tejas Riders in a minimum of a coaching position.ย ย 

  • Organized, participant-focused, and safety consciousย ย 

  • Excellent written and verbal communicationย ย 

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racismย ย 

  • Excited about working with youth and young adults of all ages and with variable needsย ย 

  • At least two summers of experience as a camp counselor or similar participant-focused role in a youth camp setting, or equivalent work experience with similar functions and responsibilitiesย ย 

  • Ability to address staff and camper conflicts, concerns, and questions inย an equitableย and developmentallyย appropriate mannerย ย 

  • Ability to eat, teach, and play respectfully and fruitfully with diverse staff all day, with limited privacy and personal time.ย ย 

  • Willingness to live in campย settingย with exposure to wildlife, including bugs, spiders, and snakesย ย 

  • Willingness to be active outdoors all day in variable weather conditions (high heat over 100ยฐF/38ยฐC, high humidity, rain, wind,ย possible tornadoes) and to walk extensively around campย ย 

  • Willingness to role model respect, positivity, smiling, cheerfulness, kindness, patience, honesty, inclusion, good mental hygiene, and accountability and to self-regulate emotions respectfully in a variety of circumstancesย ย 

  • Ability to lift 50 poundsย frequentlyย and repeatedly.ย 

  • Knowledge of basic equine care, saddling, and safety.ย 

  • Willingness to listen to, learn from, and cooperate with othersย ย 

  • Willingness to embrace a simple living environment while staying on campย ย 

  • Ability to work long hours all day and all week with possible need to respond toย EQ staffย emergencies overnight.ย ย 

  • Demonstrate and promote a climate of courtesy, respect and professionalism to coworkers, the volunteers served by this council, and others with whom this job puts them in contactย ย 

  • Upon employment,ย employeeย must register as an adult member in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Lawย ย 

  • Attendance is an essential job requirement defined as having regular, consistent, reliable,ย punctualย and predictable attendance including the ability to work regular hours and shifts, before and after hours, and on weekends, whenย requiredย ย 

  • Must complete and pass a criminal background checkย ย

Must abstain from:ย ย ย 

  • Use of tobacco products, herbal intoxicants (CBD, THC, gummies, etc.), vaping and electronic cigarettes, alcohol, illegal drugs, firearms, and fireworks while on camp property or while on duty, plus abstain fromย possessingย on camp property and from returning to camp under the influence of any such substancesย ย ย 

  • Use of explicit language or harmful languageย ย ย 

  • Volatile expressions of emotionย ย ย 

  • Romantic or sexual activity on camp, no public display of affectionย ย ย 

  • Wearing clothing that features alcohol, drugs, or harmful topics or languageย ย ย 

  • Sharing or discussing private, adult issues with campersย ย ย
