Job description

About Captive Resources:

Captive Resources (CRI) is the industry-leading consultant to member-owned group captive insurance companies, helping businesses take control of their insurance destiny. Founded in 1985, CRI replaces traditional, one-size-fits-all insurance programs with a member-owned model that bases premiums on each company’s individual loss experience rather than state rates or industry averages. CRI supports dozens of group captives and thousands of member companies across the United States, providing expertise in safety and loss prevention, claims advocacy, risk management, operational oversight, and financial and investment services. Collectively, CRI’s captives represent more than $6 billion in gross premiums and substantial assets under management. CRI is also recognized for its exceptional workplace culture.

The company has been named Best Places to Work by Business Insurance (2017–2025), Top Workplaces by the Chicago Tribune (2017–2025), and Top Workplaces in the U.S.A. by USA National Top Workplaces (2021–2025). With a collaborative, employee-focused culture, CRI delivers outstanding results for its captives and member companies. Headquartered in Itasca, Illinois, CRI is currently owned by a group of investors led by one of the world’s largest and most successful private equity firms. For more information, please visit www.captiveresources.com.

About the Position
This is a unique opportunity to join CRI, a fast-growing organization with an active in-house legal department supporting CRI’s captive insurance, reinsurance, and investment operations. As a Legal Summer Intern, you will work closely with CRI’s Legal team and have direct exposure to how legal issues are identified and addressed in a fast-paced, in-house environment.

More specifically, you will (1) support legal research and analysis across corporate, insurance, reinsurance, employment, and compliance matters; (2) assist with drafting, reviewing, and updating a variety of legal and business documents, including non-disclosure agreements, vendor agreements, reinsurance agreements, and information memoranda; (3) collaborate directly with cross-functional teams such as Finance, HR, IT, Tax and Broker Services; (4) assist with the development of internal policies, procedures, and legal training materials, including compliance updates; (5) support legal technology initiatives, including testing and training related to CRI’s contract management system; (6) gain exposure to an established mutual fund for CRI’s captive members through review of investment-related agreements, policies, and recurring calls with leadership; and (7) contribute to materials explaining the formation and operation of new captives.

This role offers meaningful, hands-on legal experience, regular interaction with in-house attorneys, and a high degree of responsibility and learning for a law student interested in insurance, corporate, and in-house legal practice. This role also provides the opportunity to work with an assigned mentor and be part of CRI’s overall larger cross-functional summer internship program.

Requirements
β€’ Bachelor’s degree and currently pursuing a law degree from an accredited law school
β€’ Strong team attitude while also thriving independently and collaborating effectively in team environments
β€’ Strong skills in Microsoft Office, especially using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
β€’ Organization, planning and prioritization skills
β€’ Commitment to company values
β€’ Strong critical, commercial, strategic, and practical thinking skills
β€’ Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and completing projects within prescribed deadlines
β€’ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
β€’ Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule and work style to support the needs of a fast-growing organization
β€’ Position is based in Itasca, Illinois (home of CRI’s corporate headquarters), with some work-from-home flexibility
