What is a summer virtual internship?

A Summer Virtual Internship is a temporary, remote work experience offered during the summer months, allowing students or recent graduates to gain professional skills and industry exposure without needing to be physically present at a company’s location. Interns typically complete real-world projects, receive mentorship, and participate in virtual meetings or training sessions. This format provides flexibility, the opportunity to work for organizations around the world, and valuable resume experience, even for those who cannot relocate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer virtual intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Virtual Intern, you typically need strong organizational skills, proficiency in written communication, and the ability to manage time effectively, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant academic program. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Zoom, Google Workspace, and project management platforms (e.g., Trello or Asana) is often required. Initiative, adaptability, and proactive communication help interns stand out in remote settings. These skills are essential for meeting deadlines, contributing to team projects, and making a positive impression in a virtual work environment.

What are some common challenges interns face during a summer virtual internship, and how can they overcome them?

A common challenge in summer virtual internships is staying engaged and connected with the team due to remote work. It's easy to feel isolated or unsure about expectations when communication is mostly digital. To overcome this, interns should proactively schedule check-ins with supervisors, participate actively in virtual meetings, and make use of collaboration tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Setting daily goals and maintaining a structured routine also helps interns stay productive and visible to their team.

  • Production Engineering Intern: Reviewed and redlined technical drawings for the integration of new flow meter on a centrifuge, ensuring compliance with site engineering standards

By choosing Evonik, you will also have the opportunity to meet executives that are apart of Evonik's North American Leadership Team (NALT), learn more about Evonik's business portfolio and network with your peers through a virtual Let's Connect Series.
