Job Summary
The Student Assistant will support the Department of Computer Science as a Research Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Fall 2026. We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student with strong programming skills, a solid understanding of data structures and algorithms, and some knowledge of data science and machine learning (through coursework, self-learning, or personal projects). The selected student will work with Ph.D. and master's students to help develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools for analyzing biological images.
Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.
Employment is contingent upon funding.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing AI-based computational tools for analyzing biological images.
  • Help implement machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and image processing algorithms.
  • Work closely with graduate students on research projects.

Shift Specifics
  • Up to 12 hours per week
  • Flexible with schedule of availability

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field at Georgia Southern University (junior and senior students are preferred)
  • Good academic standing (GPA above 3.3).

Preferred Experience
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, C, or C++, or a willingness to learn these programming languages.
  • Some knowledge of data science and machine learning (including through self-learning) is preferred.
  • Strong interest in research, problem-solving, and learning new skills.

Proposed Salary
$13.00 per hour
This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
