ABOUT CHILD DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE
CDI is a leading childrenโ€™s mental health agency in the City of Toronto offering a range of services to approximately 3,500 children ages 0โ€12, youth ages 13-18 and their families each year. Our mission is to promote and support the healthy development of children and to strengthen the families and communities in which they live. We provide four streams of service to families in need: early intervention, family violence, healthy child development and specialized mental health services for children and youth with learning disabilities.
POSITION SUMMARY
Child Development Institute is seeking 2 energetic Junior Camp Counsellor (JC) to join our day camp which operates out of our St. Clair Gardens site for a 6 week summer contract. The successful candidate will ensure that the conceptualization and delivery of CDI programs and services are consistent with the mission, values, policies, procedures, standards, and priorities of the organization and are provided within assigned resources. The candidate will work within a therapeutic day camp setting utilizing the SNAPยฎ model, an evidence-based CBT program that serves children exhibiting serious behavioral, emotional and/or social challenges.
What the role is all aboutโ€ฆ

  1. Support camp counsellors with the planning, implementation and delivery of Camp programs;
  2. Participates in the effective implementation of specialized therapeutic programming for camp;
  3. Supports counsellors with day-to-day programming;
  4. Acts as a positive role model for children, youth, co-workers and families;
  5. Performs other assigned duties as it related to the camp.

What we hope you will bringโ€ฆ
โ–ช Must be trained on SNAP strategies and experience in behaviour management.
โ–ช Must be a SNAP graduate
โ–ช Standard First Aid and CPR;
โ–ช Must have a current and valid police record check with broad sector screening
Skills, Attributes, and Abilities
โ–ช Strong leadership, coaching, planning, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skill sets
โ–ช Direct experience in a therapeutic or therapeutic recreational setting is an asset;
โ–ช Excellent administrative, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
โ–ช Exceptional communication skills, both orally and in writing;
โ–ช Ability to assume responsibility and exercise good judgment in making decisions within the scope of authority of the position;
โ–ช Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment;
โ–ช Demonstrated ability to work in a respectful and aware manner with groups from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
โ–ช Must be patient and compassionate
โ–ช Assertiveness, responsible work ethic, and able to work proactively
โ–ช Preferred candidates will have or are working towards experience in the fields of social work, child and youth care, and/or teaching
Workplace Environment
โ–ช Governed by concurrent and dynamic deadlines, despite conflicting priorities and frequent interruptions;
โ–ช Occasional travel to other community sites;
โ–ช Fast-paced work environment;
โ–ช Frequent handling of queries and calls from managers and staff;
โ–ช Occasionally required to work flexible hours related to the needs of the camp.
