Job description

Camp Counselors provide a safe, nurturing environment by maintaining an atmosphere where children feel comfortable. Their key role is to supervise a huddle of day camp children. They understand and support the mission of the YMCA. Counselors support the camp leadership daily with implementation of the summer programming.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• Previous experience working with children under 13 years old
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Supervise assigned huddle
a. Maintain proper supervision of children meeting ratio regulations.
b. Uphold overall health and safety of each child enrolled in program, including monitoring and reporting suspected abuse.
c. Models appropriate behavior in a positive, respectful manner.
d. Interacts effectively and frequently with children.
e. Develop supportive relationships with participating children.
f. Ensure children have a positive, fun, safe experience while at the program.
g. Responds to behavioral issues consistent with YMCA standards.
h. Seeks assistance when needed
• Helps to create a setting that is welcoming and engaging, and meets the needs of the children.
a. Assist with the proper maintenance and housekeeping of program facility.
• Assists supervisors with management of volunteers (Jr. counselors) amp; counselors in training
• Assist and participate in all program activities.
a. Always report for duty 10 minutes before scheduled activity and in proper uniform.
• Responds to coaching by correcting actions in a timely manner.
• Attends to the proper maintenance and housekeeping of the camp
a. Maintain a setting that is welcoming and engaging, and meets the needs of the children
b. Assists to ensure huddle site amp; all areas of camp are keep orderly
c. Monitor needs and usage of program equipment

Position Requirements:
1. Be aware of and adhere to all YMCA policies and procedures.
2. Wear the YMCA staff uniform to work every day.
3. Hand in all paperwork by required deadline.
4. Complete required YMCA training by required deadline
5. Attend all staff meetings and trainings
6. Report accidents and incidents to supervisor in a timely manner.
7. Follow chain of command and ensure excellent communication.
8. Any other work requested by YMCA

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range, or special accommodations made of sufficient nature for completion of assigned tasks. Ability to communicate clearly through speech and understanding of the English language. Ability to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, and manual dexterity. Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds

EFFECT ON END RESULT:
Maintain positive image of the YMCA through effective programming and community relations. Assist in the development of an environment that participating children look forward to attending. Create a positive experience for self and others at the Y.
