College Advisor

LOCATION

North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, FL.

JOB PURPOSE

You’ll help us to assist high school students as they prepare for the next

step in their educational journey. The advisor helps students research

post-secondary options and prepare necessary college entrance

documentation, as well as ensure that students are meeting all

requirements to enter a diverse group of colleges upon graduating from

high school.

You’ll explain the college planning process, which includes application

submission, scholarship and financial aid process and help ensure each

student and family is well informed.

As a genuine team-player, you’ll work across our central, regional, and

local NBPS teams to improve student services and facilitate successful

college outcomes. Everything we do is connected to our vision to create

Your role will impact the organization by building relationships with

various college representatives and sharing information regarding the

college admission process with our teachers, staff, administrators, and

families.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support assigned students and advise them through the college planning process, which includes application submission, scholarship and financial aid process and ensuring each student and family is well informed.
• Create personal and persuasive letters of recommendation for each senior with accompanying school reports, (and juniors/sophomore letters for summer programs and scholarships)
• Help us by presenting college information at evening programs and/or class meetings to groups of parents and students.
• Lead small and large group guidance to students in grades 9-12 for college readiness.
• Deliver knowledgeable advice and positive communication to families through email, phone and individual video chat and in-person conferences.
• Attend local, state, regional, national and international professional conferences as well as workshops and counselor visit programs on college campuses.
• Assist in the coordination of informational meetings and presentations, including evening events, financial aid/scholarship presentations, college admission speaker symposium, college essay writing and application workshops.

• Standardized Testing Coordination
• Serve as the school’s lead administrator for all in-house SAT and ACT testing (both national and school-day administrations).
• Coordinate all logistics, including registration management, proctor assignments, room reservations, test-day materials, and accommodations.
• Serve as liaison with the College Board and ACT as needed.
• Manage all communication to families, faculty, and staff related to test dates, expectations, and procedures.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree required / Master's Degree preferred
• A degree in counseling and/or a school counseling certification preferred
• 1-3 years experience as a college advisor, school counselor, or college admissions counselor
• Familiarity with the IB Diploma requirements and ability to assist 10th graders in course selection
• Strong interpersonal, communication (oral and written) and organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
• Display patience and creativity when working collaboratively with a diverse student body and parents that include international students as well as students with documented learning disabilities.
• Respond effectively and timely to the needs of a diverse student and parent population.
• Strong knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies and financial policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of F-1 student VISA requirements and standardized testing for non-native English speakers.
• Knowledge of colleges that support students with learning disabilities.
• Knowledge of NCAA rules and procedures for athletes as well as the ability to be a liaison with coaches.
• Knowledge of career resources in order to assist students as they research career opportunities.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for producing reports and presentations.
• Good cross-cultural, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures.
• Excellent analytical skills – with the passion and drive to demonstrate and quantify success.
• Results orientated with the ability to consistently map efforts against identified KPIs.
• Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks.
