Job description

Position: Summer Camp Counselor

Report to: Executive Director of House In The Wood

Status: Seasonal; Temporary

Location: Delavan, Wisconsin (On-Site – Housing not provided)

House In The Wood is a summer camp, outdoor education center, and retreat center located on Delavan Lake in Southeastern Wisconsin. As a Northwestern Settlement program, we exist to further our mission of disrupting generational poverty. Implemented through a residential setting with various recreational offerings and best social-emotional learning (SEL) practices, Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for campers' direct care, guidance, and program facilitation. They are the front line in building developmental relationships with campers, between campers, and within our community. Ensuring a safe, positive, and inclusive space where our inner-city youth can thrive and create lifelong memories. Those who want to share passions/skills that can be turned into activities like STEM, Herpetology, team sports, make-up, archery, martial arts, farm & garden, performing arts, lifeguarding, and cooking

Key/Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise campers in travel to and from camp, during recreation hours, and overnight in cabins
  • Collaborate with co-counselors to design and deliver programs/activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate for campers of various ages (7-12), abilities, and backgrounds
  • Foster an environment of enthusiasm in exploration, where campers are eager to try new experiences
  • Intervene and de-escalate interpersonal disagreements and negative behavior by promoting calm, empathetic, and just mediation
  • Support with the collection of youth-development-based surveys, reports, and stories

Ideal Skills/Traits

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to participate in indoor and outdoor activities, including, but not limited to, bending, lifting, walking,
  • standing in water, boating, and being close to reptiles, amphibians, insects, and poultry
  • Fluent in Spanish and English preferred, but not required
  • Willingness to learn

Experience/Education

  • One year of collective experience serving in summer camps, youth recreation, school-based programs, or related fields
  • High School Diploma or GED required - college-level degree or certificate in related field preferred
