Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for professionals experienced in materials science, materials R&D, characterization workflows, process development, reliability analysis, computational materials work, and structured scientific documentation.

This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on structured materials science review, R&D workflow analysis, experimental documentation, characterization report assessment, simulation review, technology transfer materials, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will apply their materials science expertise to review realistic research scenarios, evaluate technical requirements, prepare structured written outputs, and support accurate, evidence-based materials R&D workflow tasks.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Materials R&D & Experimental Workflow Review

  • Review materials science scenarios involving experimental write-ups, project proposals, research plans, process development notes, and technology transfer materials
  • Evaluate R&D documentation against source materials, technical requirements, experimental constraints, and expected scientific outcomes
  • Support structured review of research records, lab documentation, project memos, IP disclosures, and materials development workflows
  • Identify missing assumptions, documentation gaps, technical inconsistencies, and expected research review outcomes

Characterization, Reliability & Failure Analysis

  • Review characterization scenarios involving XRD, SEM/TEM, spectroscopy, thermal analysis, reliability testing, failure analysis, and advanced materials evaluation
  • Evaluate characterization reports and test outputs against documented criteria, source data, material properties, and technical requirements
  • Support structured review of metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, semiconductor materials, or related materials systems
  • Prepare clear written explanations for materials science decisions based on source materials and verifiable technical criteria

Computational Materials & Process Documentation

  • Review computational or simulation-based workflows involving DFT, molecular dynamics, process simulations, simulation results, and model documentation
  • Support structured review of materials workflows connected to tools such as VASP, Materials Studio, LabVantage, LabWare LIMS, ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or similar systems
  • Translate materials science workflows into clear, structured task documentation and review criteria
  • Maintain accuracy, consistency, and professional judgment across submitted work

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • 3+ years of experience in materials science, materials R&D, characterization, process development, computational materials science, reliability engineering, failure analysis, or related scientific roles
  • Background in one or more areas such as metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, semiconductor materials, characterization, DFT, molecular dynamics, process scale-up, or advanced materials reliability
  • Familiarity with tools and systems such as VASP, Materials Studio, LabVantage, LabWare LIMS, ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, microscopy platforms, spectroscopy tools, or similar research systems
  • Comfort reading and preparing materials science artifacts such as experimental write-ups, characterization reports, simulation results, technology transfer memos, IP disclosures, project proposals, and research summaries
  • Strong analytical thinking and written communication skills
  • Ability to translate materials science workflows into clear, structured task documentation

Educational Background

  • Master's or PhD degree in materials science, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related scientific field is helpful
  • Equivalent practical experience in materials R&D, characterization, computational materials science, process development, or reliability analysis is also highly relevant

Nice to Have

  • Experience in Fortune 500 R&D, national labs, R1 university research groups, semiconductor materials, advanced manufacturing, chemical materials, or industrial materials development
  • Familiarity with XRD, SEM/TEM, spectroscopy, thermal analysis, DFT, molecular dynamics, LIMS, process simulation, scale-up, or failure analysis workflows
  • Experience preparing or reviewing characterization reports, experimental records, simulation outputs, technology transfer memos, IP disclosures, project proposals, or reliability reports
  • Strong attention to detail in scientific, experimental, and documentation-heavy research environments
  • Experience translating complex technical work into clear written specifications or review criteria

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply materials science and R&D expertise to structured remote project work
  • Contribute to high-quality materials workflow review, characterization documentation, simulation assessment, and research scenario development
  • Work on flexible, project-based assignments aligned with your scientific background
  • Use your materials science judgment in a focused, detail-oriented research environment
  • Remote structure with competitive hourly compensation

Contract Details

  • Independent contractor role
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling
  • Part-time commitment depending on project availability
  • Competitive rates between $60โ€“$85 per hour depending on expertise
