Rhode Island Fast Ferry operates high-speed ferry service between Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard, along with scenic lighthouse cruises on Narragansett Bay.

The Role

Rhode Island Fast Ferry is seeking First Mates for our summer season (beginning in May) aboard our high-speed passenger catamarans based in North Kingstown, RI. This is a non-rotational, seasonal position—candidates must be based locally or willing to relocate. Housing is not provided.

As First Mate, you will support the Captain in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel while helping lead the onboard crew. This is a hands-on role that combines vessel operations, crew leadership, and maintenance responsibilities in a dynamic, passenger-focused environment.

What You'll Do
  • Assist the Captain with safe vessel operations and navigation
  • Help lead and support onboard crew in daily operations
  • Perform routine vessel maintenance and upkeep
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety, security, and operational procedures
  • Support a safe, efficient, and positive passenger experience
  • Assist with vessel readiness, cleanliness, and organization
  • Contribute to a strong, team-oriented onboard culture
Vessels
  • 110' high-speed passenger catamarans
  • Twin MTU 4000 diesel engines
  • Twin propeller propulsion with ride-control systems
What We're Looking For
  • USCG Master's License (100 GRT or greater)
  • Current First Aid / CPR / AED certification
  • Radar Observer (Unlimited) and practical radar experience (preferred)
  • Experience operating or working aboard high-speed vessels (preferred)
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to assist with vessel maintenance
  • Strong seamanship and situational awareness
  • Positive attitude and strong team mindset
  • Strong communication and leadership potential
