SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE/WESTLAKE -
Pump-Out Truck Operator -
Direct Service Associate III for the Smith Mountain Lake Summer Vessel Pump Out Program. The Pump Out Truck Operator (Direct Service Associate III) position will require employees to work on weekends from mid-May thru mid-September, plus an additional Monday for the Memorial Day and July 4th weekends - for which a holiday pay adjustment will be provided.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Operating the pump out truck
Offloading sewage from vessel holding tanks
Transporting sewage to a land-based holding tank
Gathering specific information from vessel owners and entering it into a daily log
Informing boaters where and how to report observed pollution problems and the importance of proper disposal of sewage.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with marina owners, other employees, and the general public.
General knowledge of operating equipment, safe operating practices and occupational hazards.
Highly organized with ability to multi-task.
Ability to handle a high volume of work and varying assignments with accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to read and comprehend and follow oral and written directions and correspondence.
Proficiency in English and spelling.
Ability to read and comprehend County, State, and Federal policies, procedures and programs of limited scope and difficulty.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong quality and service minded.
Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse team and/or independently.
Certifications/Licenses:
Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license, proof of insurance required to drive on County business, and acceptable driving record.
Education & Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Demonstrated stable work history preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Requires operation of machines, motor vehicles and/or equipment.
Heavy work requiring ability to move objects up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions.
Vocal communication required for expressing/exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
Hearing required to perceive information at normal spoken word level
Visual acuity required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving observation of general surroundings and activities.
Must be able to work in all weather conditions; subject to inside/outside environmental conditions to include to include summer heat, noise, vibrations, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
May be exposed to blood borne pathogens and infectious agents.
May be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Ability to read and comprehend County, State, and Federal policies, procedures and programs of limited scope and difficulty.
Special Requirements:
As part of the application process, all candidates must agree to a criminal background search and a drug screen.
Additionally, the opportunity for a paid internship in this summer program exists for a qualifying student. All data collected during this summer program would be made available to the student intern for use in meeting their educational internship requirements.
