Job description

Overview Background Information: This temporary summer student position supports the Atlantic Test Range (ATR) in Patuxent River, Maryland. ATR is the Navy's East Coast open-air test range and supports aviation, weapons system, and experimentation test and evaluation (T&E) events as well as warfighter training exercises. ATR provides real-time T&E services including data acquisition, instrumentation, data analysis, recording, test management, and airspace management to DoD and commercial customers. Complex, cutting-edge, one-of-a-kind instrumentation is developed and deployed within ATR's seven branches; Aircraft Signature & Avionics Measurement (ASAM), Optical Systems, Range Operations, Range Support, Range Systems, Telemetry Systems, and Test Management. The intern will be exposed to innovative technologies in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with rewarding technical challenges to solve every day! Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Support one or more Branch, getting experience with the different technologies and missions of each.
  • Support one of the following teams: Range Display Systems, Telemetry Engineering, Electro-Optical Tracking Systems, Electronic Warfare, Range Safety, Photo-G, GPS, or Patuxent River Infrared Signature Measurement.
  • Supports engineering, software development, and/or other technical efforts based on team assignment and the student's degree and interests.
  • Design and develop software and/or hardware solutions for T&E or data acquisition instrumentation systems.
  • Tests, calibrates, and configures T&E or data acquisition instrumentation systems.
  • Maintains and improves the performance of existing hardware systems or software applications.
  • Provides technical expertise in the research and investigation of emerging technologies to support flight test requirements.
  • Provides operational project and/or real-time mission support as needed.

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current enrollment in a relevant STEM Bachelor of Science degree program at an accredited college or university. Preferred majors include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, and Physics.
  • Must be able to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills and possess the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, as well as work independently on tasks
  • Must have excellent attention to detail and be able to meet deadlines
  • Must be able to demonstrate problem-solving skills and think critically
  • Must possess strong general computer skills
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and successfully pass drug screening
Clearance Requirement:
  • Currently hold or be able to obtain and maintain the proper US DoD issued security clearance, which requires US Citizenship. Security clearance eligibility may be discussed during the interview phase.
  • Employment and start date contingent upon the candidate receiving the required US DoD issued interim security clearance.
Work Conditions: Conditions may vary. Most work is performed in enclosed buildings, but some outside work may be required. Work will include sitting, standing, walking, lifting and reaching. Applicants should be capable of lifting 50-100 lbs. assisted by other employees.
