Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis.
- Applying established scientific principles, methods, procedures, and techniques to freshwater aquatic, environmental, or oil-spill research assignments.
- Preparing technical summaries, data analyses, preliminary findings, reports, presentations, or recommendations for review by senior scientists or program officials.
- Supporting research, training, testing, emerging-technology evaluation, or environmental response projects.

- Identifying research needs, data gaps, operational capability gaps, or emerging scientific issues and recommending approaches for addressing them.
- Monitoring project progress, resolving technical and administrative issues within established authorities, reviewing deliverables, and evaluating project results.
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal sector. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis.
- Serving as a recognized subject matter expert, consultant, or technical authority in freshwater aquatic science, limnology, oil-spill research and response, environmental effects, or related scientific disciplines.
- Resolving novel, obscure, highly complex, or unprecedented scientific problems for which accepted methods, procedures, or precedents are inadequate.
- Developing, evaluating, and improving advanced training, research, response, or operational capabilities for first responders and other stakeholders.
- Serving as the final or principal technical reviewer for complex studies, research products, project deliverables, response recommendations, or scientific assessments.
