Job Classification: Per Diem, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Program Director

Salary - Wage: $30/hour for group lessons, $40/hour for individual lessons


The 14th Street Y is a vibrant Jewish community center located in Downtown Manhattan. Each year, tens of thousands of New Yorkers of all ages, races, and ethnicities come to 14Y as members, visitors, or partners to experience our high quality and varied programs centered around arts and culture, early childhood education, summer camps, fitness and aquatics, Jewish life, and older adult services

JOB PURPOSE 

Teach Learn to Swim classes and water safety according to our program standards and Aquatic industry standards. Ensure health and safety of all clients in the pool and surrounding areas. 

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE 

  • Partners with internal and external customers  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES 

Job Area/Function 1 (90%)

  • Must have a current WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR certification through duration of employment
  • Teach Learn to swim group and individual classes as scheduled.
  • Be responsible for safety of students
  • Assess abilities of students to ensure appropriate level placement
  • Ensure a positive learn to swim environment 
  • Be in the water with all classes 
  • Deliver excellent customer service to all members and clients at the 14th Street Y at all times.
  • Guide customers in regards to established Aquatics protocols and proceedures .

Job Area/Function 2 (10%)

  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests.
  • Attend Aquatics Staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge 

  • Water Safety Instructor certification required.
  • Current Life Guard, CPR, and First Aid certifications a plus
  • Excellent customer service skills handling matters in courteous and friendly manner
  • Ability to work early morning, evening and weekend schedule required (Between 10 – 17 hours a week)
  • Team player and a passion to build relationships with individuals 
  • Knowledge of Aquatics industry practices
  • Proactive, hands on approach, as well as a professional work ethic
  • Self-motivated, highly efficient, strong attention to details
  • Ability to work in high pressure environment autonomously
