Job description

REPORTS TO:          ELC Director in conjunction with the Corps Officers

SUPERVISES:           N/A

SCHEDULE:              Full Time SEASONAL 

FUNCTION:               The Salvation Army Learning Center Assistant Teacher will coordinate the daily operation of the SALC School Age program year round. 


  • The Assistant School Age teacher assists the Center Administrator in coordinating the school age program. This includes but is not limited to thematic lesson planning aligned with NAEYC, Step Up To Quality and Ohio Content Standards (also used by Cincinnati Public Schools) learning standards, United Way tutoring and statistical reporting, management of Kids Café, bus scheduling, and the implementation and oversight of the summer program.
  • At The Salvation Army Learning Center, we recognize and respect the parent as the child’s first teacher. Employees of The Salvation Army Learning Center are expected to promote the necessary bond between parents, teachers, and children through professional communication that will enhance this necessary partnership.

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Maintains prompt hours. Notifies Director of impending absence.
  • Maintains a neat, clean appearance. Dresses appropriately for interaction with toddlers/children and according to The Salvation Army Dress code.
  • Cooperates with The Salvation Army Learning Center team of staff for the benefit of a solid program.
  • The Assistant School Age Teacher shall carry out the duties laid out for him/her in the classroom schedule of responsibilities. This schedule will assist in maintaining a developmentally appropriate classroom environment. 
  • Attends in –service trainings as required by Center Director, licensing and Step Up To Quality for the betterment of Center programs.
  • Keeps abreast of current issues in Early Childhood Field.
  • Supports the Lead Teacher in completing all child assessments and screenings within the timeframe provided by the Center Director.
  • Observes all policies of state licensing regulation. Observes all Salvation Army policies as outlined in Center employee handbook.
  • Adheres to the National Association for the Education of Young Children Code of Ethics (NAEYC).
  • Reports child or center management problems to the Director promptly.
  • Working in cooperation with partner agencies (i.e. 4C for Children, Promoting Resilient Children (PRC), ODJFS and Head Start for the betterment of the Center programs).
  • Is flexible to change in hours or duties as necessary to maintain proper running of the Center.

 

Specific Job Requirements

  • Plans and carries out developmentally appropriate school age program aligned with Ohio Content Standards (also used by Cincinnati Public Schools). This program will include opportunities in language, art, music (secular and Christian), science, math, social-emotional and physical development. Written lesson plans will be posted and submitted to center administrator on a weekly basis.
  • Attend weekly meetings with center administrator.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, and emotionally stable environment for children.
  • Makes changes in environment and lesson planning according to the recommendations of Step Up To Quality and 4C for Children.
  • Maintain physical environment. Reports any maintenance needs or loss of equipment to administrator properly.
  • Uses a cleaning schedule to organize self and staff to keep kitchen area clean; including any pans that were delivered by the caterer, wiping counters and removing trash.
  • Responsible for maintaining records necessary for efficient running of the Center. These include but are not limited to the following: daily morning and afternoon attendance, health checks, USDA and classroom inventory.
  • Maintain the grant guidelines for United Way tutoring and completes daily and weekly statistical reporting.
  • Set up, serve and clean up weekly Kids Café along with fellow school age teachers.
  • Report statistical data related to Kids Café.
  • During hours when children are present and awake, all teachers are expected to spend their time actively engaged with the children in their care. Classroom preparation, paperwork and other projects are to be done during paid planning time (when children are not present or during designated times in summer).

  • 1 year of experience in early childhood setting
  • 1 year of experience in preschool setting preferred
