DESCRIPTION Summer Discovery is Shoreview Parks and Recreation's highly popular summer child care program. The program operates Monday - Friday at the Shoreview Community Center, a high quality facility with numerous resources. Children entering grades K-6 spend a fun-filled summer participating in activities ranging from weekly field trips, swimming, crafts, science projects, active games and more.

We're looking for individuals who enjoy working with children and creating fun, educational activities that will make for a memorable summer. Summer Discovery staff work collaboratively to ensure participants have a safe and fun summer. DUTIES INCLUDE We are accepting applications for the following positions for the 2026 summer season.

ART SPECIALIST Monday-Thursday: 7:15 am - 5:45 pm, 40 hours/week (June-August) Plan, organize, and lead art activities that encourage self-expression such as painting, drawing, crafting, and other hand-on activities Guide campers through each activity while fostering creativity and teamwork; adapt projects for different skill levels Teach basic art techniques; supervise and assist campers during activities Ensure materials are available and safe to use; keep art supplies organized Create a fun and inclusive environment SCIENCE SPECIALIST Monday-Thursday: 7:15 am - 5:45 pm, 40 hours/week (June-August) Plan, prepare, and lead hand-on science activities and experiments while ensuring safety; supervise and assist campers Create engaging lessons to teach campers about topics such as nature, biology, chemistry, and physics Adapt activities for different age groups Ensure materials are safe to use; keep supplies organized Create a fun and inclusive environment WELLNESS & OUTDOOR SPECIALIST Monday-Thursday: 7:15 am - 5:45 pm, 40 hours/week (June-August) Plan and lead gym and outdoor activities such as sports and nature games; organize outdoor games and challenges Teach campers about wellness, fitness, and healthy habits Supervise and engage campers in physical activities; ensure camper safety during outdoor activities Promote teamwork and positive group interactions; maintain outdoor equipment and supplies Create a fun and inclusive environment GREETER (morning or afternoon) Monday-Friday: 18-25 hours/week (June-August) Greeter-AM: 6:45 am - 11 am Greeter-PM: 2:30 pm - 6:15 pm Create a welcoming and positive atmosphere for campers and families at the start or end of the day Morning greeter will greet campers and families and check them in for the day Afternoon greeter will greet parents/guardians and assist with the sign-out process ensuring participants are properly checked out Answer questions about the program; communicate important information to parents/guardians and campers Ensure safety at camp entrances; direct parents/guardians and staff where to go Help with setting up/tearing down or managing camp events QUALIFICATIONS Art Specialist / Science Specialist / Wellness & Outdoor Specialist: Must be age 18 or older Previous experience working with children required Strong passion for related subject required Desired (not required): Enrollment in (or completion of) a related degree or certificate program Greeter: Must be age 18 or older Friendly, approachable, excellent customer service skills Strong communication skills and ability to provide clear directions Please note: some specialist staff will swim and/or accompany children into the Community Center's pools as well as off-site locations to supervise and ensure safety. This is based on program needs and the employee's ability.
