What is a summer engineering student?

Summer Engineering Students are typically university or college students who participate in temporary, short-term engineering roles during the summer months. These positions allow students to gain practical experience, apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects, and develop professional skills relevant to their field of study. Summer engineering internships or jobs often involve assisting with research, design, testing, or other engineering tasks under the supervision of experienced professionals. Such roles are valuable for networking, building a resume, and exploring potential career paths within engineering.

What types of projects are summer engineering students typically assigned, and how do these projects contribute to their learning experience?

Summer Engineering Students are often assigned to support ongoing projects in areas such as design, testing, data analysis, or prototyping under the supervision of experienced engineers. These projects are designed to provide hands-on experience with real engineering challenges, helping students apply classroom knowledge to practical situations. Students frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, which enhances their problem-solving and communication skills. This exposure not only builds technical competencies but also gives insight into potential career paths within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer engineering student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Engineering Student, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, strong analytical skills, and current enrollment in an engineering degree program. Familiarity with CAD software, programming languages, and lab equipment is often required, along with exposure to industry-specific tools. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn set exceptional candidates apart. These skills enable students to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly to new challenges, and gain valuable real-world experience.

What is the difference between Summer Engineering Student vs Summer Intern?

AspectSummer Engineering StudentSummer Intern
CredentialsEnrolled in an engineering degree programTypically enrolled in a related field, may be pursuing a degree or certificate
Work EnvironmentAcademic projects, company labs, or office settingsReal-world projects within company teams, often in office or field settings
Employer UsageUniversities and companies offering internship programsCompanies seeking temporary summer help for engineering tasks
Search & ComparisonCommonly compared for educational vs practical experienceOften compared to students for work experience opportunities

The main difference is that a Summer Engineering Student is typically enrolled in an academic program and participates in internships to gain experience, while a Summer Intern may be a student or recent graduate working temporarily to develop practical skills. Job description

We explore and discover the limitless possibilities of energy so we can all progress. We believe in the power of talent to shape the future. That's why we're looking for curious, bold individuals who are eager to grow and create new ways forward-people who want to join us in building a more sustainable, innovative, and inclusive world.
We strongly believe that diversity fuels creativity and innovation. That's why we welcome professionals who are ready to grow, learn, and bring their perspective to the energy challenges of today and tomorrow.
Here, you'll find a place to grow and unlock your full potential.

Repsol is seeking an engineering student to intern with the Development Engineering Team during the summer of 2027.

Repsol is one of the top companies in the oil and gas industry. We are present across the entire value chain: exploration and production, transformation, development, and marketing of energy that is efficient, sustainable, and competitive for millions of people.

Repsol is committed to our internship program and helping students enhance their academic studies with real-world, hands-on projects. As an intern, you'll work on real projects that deliver tangible benefits and measurable results. At the same time, you'll have the opportunity to learn about and help to solve some of the most important issues we face. You will experience genuine teamwork, and work alongside highly qualified and experienced colleagues, while you work on live projects and operations. At the end of your internship, you will present your summer project to our staff.

Repsol's student employment program offers the following advantages.

  • Mentoring by experienced professionals in your field.

  • Increasing levels of challenge and responsibility as skill and industry knowledge grow.

  • The opportunity to gain hands-on experience and apply your academic knowledge.

  • Exposure to different technical groups across the company.

  • Technical and software training.

About the Role

The Development Engineering Intern will support our Facilities and Process Engineering teams in the design, optimization, and execution of surface facilities and infrastructure supporting upstream oil and gas development. This role offers handson exposure to project engineering, process modeling, facility design, production optimization, and field development planning.

Interns will work alongside experienced Development Engineers on real projects involving cost estimation, process simulations, equipment sizing, data analysis, and project execution for oil, gas, and water handling systems.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities & Process Engineering

  • Assist in the design, modeling, and optimization of surface facilities, including:

    • Oil, gas, and water separation equipment

    • Storage, treating, and measurement systems

    • Compression, dehydration, and artificial lift support systems

  • Perform basic process simulations (e.g., heat/mass balance, fluid flow, equipment performance) using software tools such as Aspen HYSYS, ProMax, or similar.

  • Support equipment sizing calculations and development of preliminary PFDs and P&IDs.

Project Engineering & Execution

  • Help prepare project scopes of work, cost estimates, bid packages, and project schedules.

  • Participate in project reviews, contractor meetings, and field site visits.

  • Conduct data gathering and field verification to support engineering and construction activities.

  • Assist with project documentation, including MOCs, construction packages, and asbuilt drawings.

Field Development Support

  • Support development planning activities such as facility debottlenecking studies, infrastructure assessments, and economic analyses.

  • Analyze production, pressure, and facility performance data to identify optimization opportunities.

  • Support crossfunctional collaboration with Production, Drilling & Completions, Land, HSE, and Operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Fully authorized to work for any employer in the US without sponsorship now or in the future. Additionally, we are not authorized for employment under OPT/CPT/F1 visa programs.

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Students with an expected graduation 2028-2029 are encouraged to apply (juniors or sophomores). May 2027 graduates may only be considered if enrolled in a post-graduate program.

  • Must have cumulative and major GPA of 3.3 or higher, to be confirmed with transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable)

  • Must be available for a continuous 12-week period for the duration of the 2027 summer intern program, starting May 17th and ending on August 6th.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other engineering calculation tools.

  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to engineers and field personnel.

  • Strong interest in data analysis, business analytics, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

  • Ability to work with data and derive meaningful insights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or project experience in:

    • Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer

    • Process design and controls

    • Facility and equipment design

    • Project management or engineering economics

  • Experience with simulation tools such as HYSYS, ProMax, or PIPEPHASE.

  • Previous internship or field experience in oil and gas, energy, or industrial facilities.

  • Working knowledge of P&IDs, PFDs, and equipment datasheets.

What You Will Gain

  • Exposure to real engineering challenges within active oil & gas assets.

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Field experience observing operations and construction activities.

  • Mentorship from experienced Development, Facilities, and Process Engineers.

  • Opportunities to contribute to meaningful projects that impact production, efficiency, and safety.

Internship Details:

  • Position will be based out of our office in The Woodlands, TX. Interns are expected onsite Monday-Friday, with the exception of 9/80's. The 9/80 schedule is optional per the manager's discretion, based on intern project scope and timeline.

  • Non-local candidates may be considered but must arrange their own travel and temporary accommodations. A summer stipend will be provided to help offset out of pocket expenses.

  • Students must be available for the full duration of the internship from May 17-Aug 6. Any personal time off must be approved by the supervisor as unpaid leave and should be noted with the recruiter as early as possible.

  • Interns will receive an hourly wage but are not eligible for benefits or paid time off. Interns will be compensated for observed company holidays.
