What is a Summer Data Engineer job?

A Summer Data Engineer is a seasonal or internship role focused on assisting data engineering teams with tasks like data pipeline development, ETL processes, and database management. This role typically involves working with programming languages such as Python or SQL, cloud platforms, and data processing frameworks. Summer Data Engineers help ensure that data is efficiently collected, stored, and accessible for analysis. The position provides hands-on experience in data infrastructure and is ideal for students or early-career professionals looking to gain industry experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Summer Data Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Data Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python or SQL), data structures, and data processing concepts, typically supported by ongoing or completed coursework in computer science, statistics, or related fields. Familiarity with data engineering tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure) is often expected, as are internships, workshops, or relevant technical certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, effective communication skills, and teamwork help set applicants apart. These competencies enable you to efficiently support data-driven projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute meaningfully during a short-term internship or seasonal assignment.

Job description

Senior Advisor - Data & Analytics

Historically, data was often viewed as a byproduct of business processes-stored for record-keeping and basic reporting. Today, data is the lifeblood of the modern enterprise. To remain competitive, Elanco must evolve from simply collecting data to mastering it at scale.

The Data & Analytics Senior Advisor is a pivotal role within the Enterprise Technology & Insights organization. This individual will support the development and implementation of a unified Data & Analytics vision: ensuring our data is easy to find, inherently trusted, and used effectively to unlock data-driven decisions and power intelligent systems.

The role requires a unique blend of strategic thought leadership and practical execution. You will act as the critical bridge between Product Management, Engineering, Business Intelligence, and Data Science, ensuring that our technical capabilities translate directly into business value.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Support the definition and execution of the Data & Analytics vision, focusing on scalability and the "Data as a Product" mindset.
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture to ensure data models and pipelines support long-term business intelligence and AI/ML goals.
  • Identify opportunities to modernize the data ecosystem, reducing technical debt while improving data accessibility and quality.
  • Ensure that data governance, privacy, and security are "baked-in" to every stage of the data lifecycle.
  • Act as the primary translator and bridge between Product Management (the "what"), Engineering (the "how"), and Data Science/BI (the "so what").
  • Engage closely with IT and Information Security to ensure data platforms are robust, compliant, and performant.
  • Establish strong partnerships with business units to anticipate their analytical needs and proactively deliver data solutions that drive ROI.
  • Advise delivery teams across the project lifecycle, ensuring alignment with the broader D&A strategy.
  • Bring an external lens to Elanco, staying abreast of emerging trends in Data Engineering, Agentic AI, and modern data stack architectures.
  • Manage relationships with strategic data vendors and consortia to shape industry-leading approaches.
  • Position Elanco as a leader in the Data & Analytics space through external engagement and thought leadership.
  • Serve as a coach and mentor across the D&A community to advance technical acumen and product-centric thinking.
  • Participate in recruitment and talent programs to build a world-class data organization.
  • Identify skill gaps within the team and proactively suggest development paths for future-ready data roles.

What You Need to Succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Education: Master's or equivalent in business or data management
  • Required Experience: 7+ years of experience in technology leadership, specifically within Data & Analytics or Enterprise Insights environments.
  • 7+ years of experience across the data lifecycle: data engineering, warehousing, BI tools, and data science integration.
  • Practical experience leading product-centric teams, with a proven track record of delivering data products to production.
  • 7+ years of experience working with public cloud data architectures (e.g., Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Snowflake, or Databricks).
  • 3+ years of experience working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex data concepts to non-technical senior leadership.
  • Expertise in bridging the gap between technical engineering requirements and business-facing product roadmaps.
  • Strong negotiation and facilitation skills, particularly in complex, global matrix organizations.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Indianapolis, IN Global HQ (Hybrid Environment)
  • Occasional travel may be required.
