Job description

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) is the immediate conversion of the spoken

word to text, streamed to the internet or directly to computers, for individual or group viewing.


Position Summary

The Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) Captioner provides real-time captioning services for deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and visitors participating in educational, administrative, and public events. The CART Captioner instantly converts spoken English into accurate written text using specialized stenographic equipment and captioning software, ensuring equal communication access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable federal and state accessibility laws.


The CART Captioner delivers services in classroom settings, meetings, conferences, orientations, ceremonies, workshops, and virtual learning environments while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, impartiality, and accuracy.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The CART Captioner shall:

  • Provide accurate, real-time verbatim captioning of spoken communication.
  • Deliver CART services for:
    • Classroom lectures
    • Academic tutoring
    • Student orientations
    • Faculty and staff meetings
    • Training sessions
    • Public events
    • Graduation ceremonies
    • Workshops
    • Conferences
    • Virtual meetings and online classes
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CART equipment, captioning software, computers, and internet connections.
  • Stream captions to individual computers, tablets, projection screens, or online meeting platforms.
  • Arrive at assignments early to prepare equipment and verify system functionality.
  • Maintain excellent communication with the scheduling coordinator regarding assignment status.
  • Notify management immediately of emergencies, scheduling conflicts, or delays.
  • Produce highly accurate captioning while maintaining appropriate speed and readability.
  • Adapt quickly to different speakers, accents, specialized terminology, and educational subjects.
  • Research terminology before assignments when materials are available.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all educational records and communications.
  • Remain neutral and refrain from participating in conversations or discussions occurring during assignments.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Complete required service documentation and assignment reports.
  • Submit accurate timesheets and service records.
  • Assist with testing and implementation of remote captioning technologies.
  • Maintain all required certifications and continuing education.


Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred).
  • Formal CART or real-time captioning training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in real-time stenography.
  • Excellent English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary.
  • Outstanding listening and concentration skills.
  • Strong keyboarding and real-time transcription abilities.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of caption accuracy during extended assignments.


Assignments may be virtual or in person.
