Job description

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
The Custodial Manager is a working supervisor responsible for the day-to-day leadership, scheduling, training, and performance management of custodial staff across all shifts. This role ensures cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance standards across the University and reports to the Assistant Director of Facilities Operations. This position is designed for a working supervisor who monitors and improves the overall cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance of the University's working and living environment by providing exceptional supervisory skills and janitorial expertise blended with outstanding customer service skills.
Responsibilities:
Management, Supervision & Training
  • Supervise custodial staff and student workers, including scheduling, task assignment, coaching, and performance evaluation.
  • Train employees in proper cleaning techniques, equipment operation, safety protocols, and efficient use of materials.
  • Inspect work regularly and direct corrective actions to ensure cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate personnel and training records.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, EPA standards, and University custodial policies.
  • Report facility hazards or safety risks as needed.

Custodial Duties
  • Clean classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and common areas.
  • Operate various types of cleaning machines, i.e. floor machines, waxers, and polishers.
  • Empty trash, recycling, and refuse containers.
  • Perform snow removal as needed.
  • Support upkeep of parking structures and ensure proper recycling practices.

Operational Oversight of Supplies & Equipment
  • Maintain custodial supply levels and reorder materials as needed.
  • Manage inventory of custodial closets and ensure safe chemical storage.
  • Inspect custodial equipment and coordinate repairs or replacement as needed.

Additional Duties
  • Oversee the setup of rooms and spaces for university events.
  • Serve on Facilities-related committees as assigned.
  • Assist the Director of Facilities Operations with routine departmental work as requested.
  • Work with the Event Services Manager to prepare residence halls for occupants attending summer programs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Education or Work Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years supervisory experience; preference for managing 15 or more staff.
  • At least two years of custodial experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
    • Incumbent must pass a satisfactory motor vehicle check

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proficiency in Spanish preferred
  • Knowledge of custodial procedures, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Ability to train staff effectively in cleaning techniques and equipment use.
  • Computer literacy including Word, Excel, and ability to learn new systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct group training sessions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and University partners
