Job description

Temporary Summer Staff Assistant

This is a temporary, summer-only position. The City of Boston, Parks & Recreation Department, offers a wide variety of summer programs, including, but not limited to, drop-in programs, golf, soccer, rugby, sports camp(s), baseball, softball programs, and much, much more. The Staff Assistant(s) support and/or plan, organize and conduct age-appropriate programs, including educational activities, games and drop-in activities for youth throughout the Greater Boston Neighborhoods.

Responsibilities
  • Provides quality instruction/skill development for teen/youth sports/recreation programs.
  • Exhibits leadership in setting a positive tone and attitude in all aspects of the job.
  • Responsible for equipment setup and breakdown.
  • Monitors and supervises participants and ensures their safety and security at all times.
  • Attends and participates in all necessary training and staff meeting(s).
  • Ensures a fun environment for all program participants.
  • Follows dress code determined by the appropriate Program Director and/or Manager.
  • Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
  • Prior experience working with youth ages 5-18 is a plus.
  • Previous summer recreation programming, summer camp, sports camp, golf, and drop-in program experience preferred.
  • Must have the capability to instruct or lead a variety of sports and games for varied levels of skill ability.
  • Must be familiar with emergency procedures and protocol.
  • Ability to create strong relationships with youth in a short period of time.
  • An interest in a variety of youth programs, including technology, art, sports, and recreation.
  • Must be flexible and able to function well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-paced environment with continual distractions.
  • Must be enthusiastic, patient, creative, energetic, mature, and able to focus on a continual basis.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is a plus.
  • Staff Assistants must commit to 20-30 hrs/wk during summer camp weeks.

Background Checks Required: Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI). Boston Residency Required. Terms: Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Non-Union / $17-$26 per hour; pay rate depends on program and experience. Hours per week: 20-30 hrs per week
