SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR



Summer Camp Counselor

General Statement of Job
Under direct supervision, performs responsible work by assisting in the supervision and implementation of seasonal camp programs and activities. Work is performed under the supervision of the Camp Director and/or Recreation & Leisure Service Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
Conducts and supervises camp activities including crafts, sports, games, swimming, trips and other social recreational activities.
Ability to lead and instruct groups.
Implements activities according to schedule as well as the ability to plan certain activities.
Conducts programs in an orderly fashion maintaining discipline and good conduct from the participants.
Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding camps, classes and activities.
Assists in the organization of administrative records including but not limited to daily attendance, participant emergency information, accidents reports, and medication logs.
Assists in set-up and preparation of needed materials/supplies/ equipment. Enforces rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants.
Maintains neatness and cleanliness of activity areas. Administer basic first aid as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age. Requires a junior high school diploma supplemented by a combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High School graduate and experience working with children preferred. Must possess or have the ability to obtain within 1 month of hire; CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License or Florida ID. Must possess or obtain the most current FEMA 100, 200, and 700 Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of appointment to the job.
Minimum Standards and Qualifications Required
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, basic office equipment, and telephone. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Must be able to swim. Routinely works in outside weather conditions. Noise level in work environment is generally loud.
Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals. Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, correspondence, etc., with proper format. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence. Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and the public.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency or unusual situations. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a slight degree and to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.
Knowledge: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Camp Counselor. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the areas of recreation, program organization and implementation, etc. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Has the ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Is able to prepare simple reports and records.
Has knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has the ability to communicate professionally in confrontational situations. Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage. Has knowledge of and skill in the use of computers for data and word processing. Has knowledge of the standard equipment, tools, materials and practices of the industry. Has skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Has knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
