What is a summer associate intern?

Summer Associate Interns are typically graduate or law students who work temporarily at a firm, often during the summer months, to gain practical experience in their field of study. These internships are designed to provide hands-on exposure to real projects, mentorship from experienced professionals, and insight into the organization’s culture. For many, the role serves as an extended interview, with strong performance potentially leading to a full-time job offer after graduation. The position is common in industries such as law, consulting, and finance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer associate intern?

To excel as a Summer Associate Intern, you typically need strong analytical abilities, academic excellence, and a relevant educational background such as being enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office, data analysis software, or industry-specific platforms is often required. Outstanding communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns build relationships and contribute effectively to projects. Job description

Are you looking to combine your passion for technology with your penchant for strategic problem-solving? Appian's Customer Success team is obsessed with great customer outcomes. We deliver mission-critical business impact fast, and as an intern, you will directly support our department in partnering with our customers to bring their best ideas to life. This 10-week, in-person internship program offers an authentic, real-world experience doing tangible and meaningful work to jumpstart your career.

Appian's Customer Success team is dedicated to enabling rapid, high-impact business transformation. We partner directly with organizations to model, orchestrate, and optimize their most complex workflows on the Appian platform. By joining this highly collaborative group, you will play a vital role in helping our clients succeed and driving Appian's leadership in the AI-Powered Process Automation market.

As an Associate Consultant Intern, under the mentorship of your project team, you will learn to build, deploy, and scale solutions using the Appian platform. This intensive, 10-week summer program provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on expertise with our software, build professional consulting skills, and make a tangible impact on real-world client strategies at our global headquarters.

This internship is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. Interns in this program are expected to be in the office 5 days a week to fully experience our culture, learn directly from peers and mentors, and contribute to projects in a collaborative environment. Being in the office provides more opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate with the exceptional people across Appian.

Applicants considered for Summer 2027

What You'll Do
  • Build and deploy robust, web-based applications on the Appian platform to support our customers' digital strategies.

  • Utilize a strong aptitude for analyzing business strategies and a passion for using technology to solve complex problems.

  • Design supporting change management artifacts and materials to drive user adoption of newly deployed digital solutions.

  • Collaborate in-person daily with peers and mentors, actively contributing to team deliverables in a fast-paced environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related STEM field with a strong academic record. Must be returning to school following the completion of the Summer 2027 internship to continue degree requirements.

  • Program Availability: Ability to commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) schedule for the duration of the 10-week summer program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic or previous professional experience working with relational databases (such as Oracle or SQL) and cloud technologies.

  • Prior experience in a technical internship or a portfolio of significant personal/academic projects.

  • A strong aptitude for analyzing business strategies and a passion for using technology to solve complex problems.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.

At this time, Appian will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.

Thank you for your interest in joining our team! Please note that we will officially begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews starting August 2026. We appreciate your patience and look forward to connecting with you then.

At Appian, we embrace AI as part of how we work and innovate. While candidates are encouraged to use AI for preparation and learning, we restrict AI usage for live interviews and assessments unless otherwise specified. In some cases, AI use may be part of the assessment, and expectations will be communicated in advance.
