Lunch/Recess Monitor – Title I Funded Position

The Lunch/Recess Monitor is a grant-funded position supported through Title I funds. The primary purpose of this assignment is to provide supervision and support for students during scheduled lunch and recess periods, allowing classroom teachers to be released from these duties to participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and other Title I-supported professional learning activities.

This position supports the school's instructional improvement efforts by creating protected time for teachers to collaborate, analyze student data, plan instruction, and engage in professional learning focused on improving student achievement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide active and attentive supervision of students during lunch, recess, and other assigned non-instructional periods.

2. Maintain a safe, positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students.

3. Monitor student behavior and reinforce school expectations, procedures, and safety protocols.

4. Assist students with appropriate routines and transitions before, during, and after lunch and recess.

5. Address minor student concerns and conflicts using school-approved behavior and supervision practices.

6. Communicate significant behavioral, safety, or student concerns to the appropriate school staff member.

7. Ensure students are supervised and accounted for throughout the assigned duty period.

8. Support orderly transitions to and from classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other designated locations.

9. Follow all school policies (including FERPA), procedures, and safety requirements.

10. Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to ensure consistent student supervision.

11. Perform other related supervision duties as assigned and appropriate to the hourly assignment.

Title I / Grant-Funded Purpose

This hourly assignment is funded through Title I and is intended to support the school's instructional goals by providing coverage for student lunch and recess responsibilities. This coverage allows eligible classroom teachers to participate in scheduled Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) without interruption.

The position directly supports Title I goals by helping create dedicated teacher collaboration time for activities such as:

  • Reviewing and analyzing student achievement data.
  • Identifying student learning needs and instructional priorities.
  • Collaboratively planning and refining instruction.
  • Developing and monitoring interventions and supports for students.
  • Sharing effective instructional strategies and professional practices.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional learning designed to improve student outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with school-age children preferred.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, positive, and supportive environment for students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with school staff.
  • Ability to follow school policies, safety procedures, and directions.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and sound judgment.
  • Successful completion of any required school or district background screening
Work Conditions & Expectations

The Lunch/Recess Monitor will work in various school settings, including cafeterias, playgrounds, classrooms, hallways, and other designated student areas. The position requires the ability to actively supervise students, respond appropriately to student needs, and remain attentive throughout assigned duty periods.
